Throughout Cormyr very large posters can be seen:
"In an effort to increase tourism, the Lords of High Horn have, for the first time, opened the gates of High Horn Castle and invite adventurers from throughout Cormyr to participate in their High Horn Melee! There will be a melee for all sorts of adventurers! An all against all battle with the last standing the victor! A battle of MAGIC! A battle of the DIVINE! A battle of SKILLS! A battle of ARMS! And lastly, a battle of SONG!
Come one, come all! The greatest weapons crafters in the kingdom will be present to create an item for the glorious victor!"

//This will be an all against all style competition.
The brawls will be split by levels. lvl 1-7 lvl 8-14 lvl 15-20 EPIC
The Brawls will be split by Style MAGIC: Mage and Sorcerer types DIVINE: Cleric and Druid types SKILL: Rogue and Ranger types ARMS: Fighter, Barbarian, Paladin, Monk types SONG: Bard types
All competitors will be dispelled and force rested before entering the arena, buffs may not be cast until the Brawl begins.
Each character will be able to enter ONE competition. Choose wisely.
The EPIC battle will be all against all with all classes to participate.
The winner of each Brawl will get a weapon/shield/instrument of their choice crafted with properties of the DM's choice on it. Scaled to level of course.
All of these rules are subject to change as I and the staff see fit. Anyone competing loses all their rights to freedom of speech regarding the fairness of anything in the event. I and the staff will run it as we see best, and try to be fair. You have been warned.
The prospective date for this event will be MONDAY Oct 3rd. around 7pm US Mountain time. Anyone wanting to convert that to their respective time zones is welcome to it.
Post questions regarding the event here, don't send me PMs about it unless it is REALLY important. (or totally super secret!)

If you are a Fighter/Bard/Rogue or Mage/Fighter/Ranger or Paladin/Cleric/Barbarian or whatever wacky combo you may be, you must CHOOSE your battle. You can enter any of the events that suit your class skills...but choose wisely.

Two questions:
1 - Will there be restrictions on what spells, items, or abilities are used in which battle? As in, would a fighter/mage be allowed to cast attack spells if fighting in the fighter's competition?
2 - Would a competitor be able to leave the field of battle and lose by disqualification if they're getting killed, or will competitors be walled in and be forced to fight to the death? The answer doesn't change whether I will enter *a* character in the contest, but it does affect *which* character would be willing to fight.

(darkness) // hiding allowed? // are there any differences in the styles or is each an all out battle with all abilities of a character available?

//OOC: ok let's see if I can supply some answers:
1.) Shifters are druids, so will be in the DIVINE class
2.)Not sure what the OOC comment was, but please spread the word, the more the merrier!
3.) Once the Brawl begins, there will be no restrictions other than healing. A Fighter/Mage can cast fireballs if he wants, and Fighter/Rogue can Use Magic Device or whatever. The thing to consider is whether your Fighter/Mage will be better off against mages or fighters, you can enter only ONE BRAWL.
4.) Game mechanics wise, all fights are to the death. ICly, it will be until you cannot fight, which is OOCly death. All characters will be raised and healed after each Brawl. ICly, the arena has healing wards placed on it to prevent actual death.
5.) Healing supplies are NOT allowed. No potions, wands, spells or bandages. Otherwise, fights might go on FOREVER. I was going to say magical healing is allowed, but since most characters with said ability will be in the same fight, (DIVINE) I am gonna scratch that too. This is a Brawl, not a heal off!
6.) Scrolls/Wands/Items/Etc are allowed as long as they are not healing items. The Brawl is a free for all no holds barred fighting except for healing. Darkness, Hiding, etc all allowed.
7.) All the fights are an all out Brawl, same style, except that different skills will be used obviously.
8.) There ya go, check out the map.
9.) The location of the tourney is HIGH HORN CASTLE. There is a Portal set up in the Suzail City Core that gives a direct route to High Horn. Then follow the path to the Castle and through the door it will take you to the tourney grounds.
IF THE SERVER RESETS I WILL HAVE TO SET IT UP AGAIN. No big deal, but if the portal is gone, don't bother trying to hike out there, the tourney grounds will be inaccessible.

//Because True Sight no longer is capable of spotting someone in Greater Sanctuary, I suggest that it, Timestop, and Bigbys spells be disallowed. Bigbys has no effective counter besides mantles, Timestop is designed in PnP to only let someone cast buffs and is simply too effective in a duel to be reasonable, and if GS is allowed in you're going to end up with stalemates as people cast it, and refuse to come out until it's tactically advantageous.....which will be never since their opponent is doing the same.

// I totally agree, also. As its a duel I dont think anyone would have time to yank out bandages and potions to heal... So, that a no go to would help speed things along also. I would like to know what the rules would be for a sorcerer to enter in the melee tourney? I have a Sorcerer/ Barbarian I was debating which to enter. If a caster type enters the melee portion, is there a limit to what spells they are allowed to use? I am fine if its just buffs and no combat spells like hold person or something. Just looking for clarification before I make a selection.

A mage against a bunch of fighters probably works okay until you get to the level 9 spells, and the mage can cast time stop. That really un-levels the playing field in favor of the mage.

// Ok more answers...
1.) Greater Sanctuary, Time Stop, Bigby's are now going to be the spells that are also banned. I want this to be a fun gory battle, not a bunch of frozen people.
2.) For a Sorcerer/Babrabrian Fighter/Mage type, they can enter either battle, but only one battle. Outside of the spells I banned above, they can use their combat spells.
3.) For the Ranger Class, I will allow a ranger to compete in ARMS instead of SKILL if he/she so wishes.
great questions! keep them coming!

The higher epics just have to cast Hellball or Greater Ruin, which a spell mantle can't defend against, and it's game over for the lower epics. So by removing things like GS and Timestop, you are basically handing the win to the highest level mage. I'd like for there to be a real skill match so a level 22, for example, might be able to pull off an upset, and not just get creamed by a Greater Ruin or Hellball in the first round.

// Epics of all types will be in there own bracket, not of spell/arms/ect but just one giant ball of epic battleness, may the last epic stand.. and it not be a ending duel between Lustig and Shamoke being all that is left deciding to slap fight for the winner... (with fishes) ;D
// Another question to me, though I can't do this if I wanted as both of my characters are in the same bracket/brawl regardless, but what of players with more than one character that desire to have both compete

It is going to be crazy and unpredictable (that is not a complaint ;D). Also high epics can do better with timestop anyway ... they could auto-quicken it. This is huge given that you can't buff before the start of combat. 2) Imagine a duel with 10 epic characters with some capable of stopping time. It might go something like ... Mage A stops time. He then casts huge death spell x2, killing 6 of 10 participants (no death wards from pre buffing). Mage B stops time. He casts empowered ice stormx2 on a cluster of two other characters (maybe kills one). Mage A stops time again and casts empowered chain litx2 on the remaining characters (kills all but High Epic Mage B) Mage B stops time again and casts empowered ice stormx2 on High Epic Mage A ... wins. It would likely take a bit longer than that ... but that should get the idea across

//I totally agree about time stop, it would make the battle stupid. However, greater sanctuary should be allowed for these reasons: 1. You cannot attack while under it. 2. It does not prevent others from acting, like time stop does. 3. It can be circumvented. A player can still hit you with area spells or indirectly with things like Isaac's. 4. It is a freely available spell to anyone in the epic contest, as opposed to epic spells that only become available at higher levels. //The problem with disallowing GS and Time Stop is, that it effectively makes it virtually impossible for newly epic (low 20s) character to compete against a level 29, say. //ok Time Stop is still banned. I hate that spell, it is annoying to me, and I don't like it, so it stays away.
Greater Sanctuary is off the banned list.
Someone explain the Bigby's stuff. I know one is weird, one works perfectly, one works too well, or something of that matter. Then I will make a ruling.
As far as competing with more than one character, I almost said yes, but I want you guys to RP in between matches. I want to see gambling, I want to hear smack talking i want to see winners gloating and getting drunk, etc. So no. One character per player.
For this event, demons and undead are allowed. I want to see some carnage!!!!!

//I doubt you can make everyone happy with this, but IMO Greater Sanctuary is bad because wizards and clerics that cast it make themselves unable to be targeted by direct attacks, and fighters types have no chance at harming them under this spell because they have no attacks that are area of effect attacks. So this spell is basically a buff till the fighters drop spell for clerics and wizards.
Bigby's Forcefull Hand is the most problematic of the Bigby spells. Neo can give you more details on all the other spells, but as an example, a character needs to have a 34 strength to have a 50% chance to save against the Forcefull Hand spell. With every 2 points in strength less than 34 the chance to save is reduced by an additional 5%. In other words, characters that get targeted by this spell usually are out of the fight for the duration, laying on their back unable to do anything, without much chance at saving against the spell unless they are crazy strong. It's worse by far, IMO, than death spells and holding spells.
And there you have my thoughts on those spells.

// Interposing Hand and Clenched Fist are fine.
Grasping Hand and Crushing Hand are kind of a gray area. They don't allow for a save and their checks are usually much harder to beat than the equivalent match-ending spell like Hold Monster and Finger of Death, just because it's much easier to boost your saving throws than it is to boost your strength and BAB for mages, much like with Forceful Hand... but unlike Forceful Hand, if you cast Clarity or Freedom of Movement or Mind Blank on yourself, you're safe from them. They can be countered.
Bigby's Forceful Hand is brokenly overpowered with no reasonable counter and should be disallowed.
(Or nerfed! I'd be fine if Forceful Hand were nerfed. It is totally deserving of nerfage. This is probably beating a dead horse by now, though.)
____________________________________________________________________
This sounds fun, all in all. Mid level Rosaline intends to try to bluff her way into the wizard contest as a bard, so as to try to match their superior magical ability with what she hopes is superior guile... or failing that, I can just have Rigrin or Camina enter in the epic competition and do their (violent and hopefully fun to watch) things.
____________________________________________________________________
I'm not really a fan of allowing Greater Sanctuary, in light of the fact that the recent adjustments to True Seeing mean that there is real way to detect an opponent under Greater Sanctuary save for peppering the area you expect them to be in with area spells and getting lucky. No really big deal either way, though, it's not a total gamebreaker like Forceful Hand... it may make mage duels somewhat more passive, and it would basically mean starting unbuffed doesn't matter in mage vs fighter duels.
Also, I think that epic spells will have less of an impact than dobian's making them out as. They're fairly underwhelming. Protection from Elements makes Hellball do nothing, and Dragon Knight and Mummy Dust aren't great if you don't have time to buff the summons (prior to her remake, Rosaline dueled with Lustig and her level 9 Gate summon /destroyed/ his Dragon Knight dragon). Greater Ruin's all that's left, and it's only just barely stronger than a Maximized IGMS, and that's if they fail the save.
I wouldn't worry about epic spells that much. What makes epic casters scarier than high teens casters are their increased save DCs on their Save or Lose spells like Dominate Monster and Wail of the Banshee, and their generally increased survivability (from Epic Mage Armor, increased HP and saving throws, and occasionally multiclassing in ways to grant further survivability, like taking a rogue dip for evasion).

// I don't think Greater Sanctuary is a good idea in a free for all. If it is allowed, anyone who can cast this spell (or use a scroll) can wait until those not in sanctuary are dead/disabled.
Yes ... casters not in greater sanctuary could try various tactics against those in greater sanctuary, but why risk themselves if they can just go into greater sanctuary themselves and prepare?
It'd be less exciting if all the mages/clerics/umd users disappeared at the start of the free for all & buffed up, waiting for the other classes to kill each other off.
I don't think much would be lost if all Bigby's hands were restricted for simplicity, but I agree with Neo's assessment of them if you want to allow some of them.
