We can only select some amnesia, for fact is that every one has slain hordes of monsters, and in the end it matters not so much. If you can by game mechanisms kill every living being in Cormyr, does not to me mean you actually have killed all couple of millions of commoners and army with their allbeit inept spellcaster artillery. What we see is not allways what we get.
Edit: Drunk, going off topic.

AGREED with grozer..
where there are smart adventurers there are smart fiends.
DM Ainur introduced a smart AI caster. who came full buffed on spawn. Not only was it smart and fully buffed, but had wicked spells. and was painted to a trigger. It was in the hullack, but it was painted by mistake there and since removed.
Epic's died very fast that night.
Fiends, Drow, Redwizards, as well as others, have huge number of resources available to them that AI does not.
Especially, wizards, what a good wizard would normally have to adventure FRC has none.
no condition spells (contingencies and spell triggers), wands and staffs that DC's are much higher then (3) hold person.
..and much more.
I also like munroes talk about admantine chain.. DC 26 thats perspective for you.
Fear should come, as it should come naturally... fear should be rational to some extent.
but are always there, like beholders. ...the linger in the dark scare.

Kind of getting off topic at this point, but... yes, the same applies to -many- high intelligence or high wisdom enemies. Liches, dragons, epic giant wizard-kings (actually, this one fights fairly smart)... a lich NPC that Camina would have been capable of soloing in the low teens wiped the floor with her when controlled by a DM and utilizing just some of the tactics that would be at a high level mage's disposal (accursed simulacrums!... although she does still blame Elvewyn) Off topic to some extent yes but it is speaks to a faulty premise that because epic adventurers have defeated all facets of evil they would never feel fear or be effected by pain nor be intimidated. Anyway not picking you out Neo, just trying to tie this all back together as I think its all relevant.

I apologize in advance if I say anything that's been said already, I didn't have time to read the whole thread I quite agree with the dragons comment..and I know that catmage echoes this sentiment as well. If anyone doubts the rather poor reflection of a dragon that NWN AI produces, just take a look at my latest work in the Wyrms of the North section under the Draconomicon of FRC in Lore of the Lands. It certainly isn't typical that a band of adventurers will waltz in and just mop up the floor with a super genius being who is hundreds of years old. Anyhow, enough on that topic....I could probably rant for hours about dragons versus PCs. The players in my 4 year running FR campaign faced 1 dragon when they were all 14th level, and I sent them running. All of their characters are scarred from the trauma to this day. Edit: I guess it is applicable, and not just a rant, since this entire party of now near epic players now trembles at the mention of a dragon. This is due to 1) The massive PAIN I laid down on them, and 2) A healthy FEAR of exactly what a fully prepared wyrm in it's lair can do to an adventuring party. I think that dragon fighting should never be easy, predictable, or certain of outcome. Just a thought, but one way to make dragon encounters more fearful and painful would be to give the dragons the Devastating Critical feat. While I have come to agree that this feat is not appropriate for a player character in a persistant world, I think it is still appropriate for monsters that should always give adventurers a healthy sense of fear. Some greater beings should have powers and abilities that adventurers never attain this side of mortality. My personal views on level caps for PC's...I don't mind them. I've played on servers with level caps of 20, 25, 30, and 40. When my character reaches the cap, I just keep playing because if I play a character to 20, I've been playing the character for a lot more than just game mechanics and levels. It doesn't matter to me much, as long as it is the same for all player characters. One good thing a level cap would do for my character though is enable him to travel with more characters out there in obediance to the 10 Level Rule In general, I think characters should exhibit a natural level of fear and or bravery depending on their experiences. For example, one can look at Mouse, one of our favorite epic Hins, and see that even at her level and with her marvelous skills she is still afraid of the aspect of a childhood experience. Bravo! For my character, there are fears that he has overcome in game and his RP shows this. He also still holds healthy fear for certain characters, monsters, and magicks that he has encountered over his career, and the fact that he may have surpassed some of them in level is irrelevant. Having flaws, warts, weaknesses helps to add dimensions to a character beyond stats, levels, and gear. Having fears and weaknesses are very much key elements in the mix. My views based on the little I read. Thanks for reading

could always say..
we want to torture you, good rp experience for all, it's a character building thing. and personally I think if a character has something like this happen it's building experience.
a rather evil character nailed my character to a floor once. I took no offence oocly. He covered his tracks....
however till this day, my character still remembers the day he had that experience, and bears the marks from it, so when the name is mentioned you get that sort of emote.
a character scarred by evil has a story!
...no torture/building character/ adding to rp.. respawn!
though, I feel that a character has a right to ask for Pg13...
we all know folk aren't as old as others, others might not be able to handle some of the stuff goes on..
pg 13, is enough for everyone to go by, and not as traumatizing as others, it still builds character, but theres no great gore detail.
I personally feel if you mind your character being tortured, in a big way even if it's PG 13, your not detached enough from your character.

I don't care if I played a dwarven druid of Pickmenose Clan or whatever. Torture....or rape for that matter is -never- okay imo. There are certain evils that humans are capable of that turn my stomach so horribly I can't imagine this as something that is -fun-. And, just my opinion, I swear I mean no disrespect to anyone at all on this server or anywhere else that can stomach it, but if you -actually- enjoy that rp.....examine oneself closely in the mirror. Again, not at all aiming at anyone, or trying to be disrespectful, this is just my opinion, please don't disrespect it with flaming me.

Maybe its not that the person enjoys it... its just RP.

I watched Ranan whip someone in the redmist square a couple years back as part of a public punishment (can't remember who). While I thought it was well played out by all parties, I found it disturbing enough to say to myself that I'm not interested in watching this happen again, or taking part in it myself.
So I guess I'm with Teneas on this one. I just don't get the torture thing, and I won't participate in it for any reason. Some things just cross the line for me and that's one of them, whether it's RP driven or not. And what's good RP for one person isn't always good RP for another, that's something that should be kept in mind.

But when you start equating IC actions with the person behind the character, as Ten just suggested, thats when I have a problem.

I'll answer your statement with a question? have you seen 300? batman? we were soilders? .. read hannibal lecter?(silence of the lambs).. Like all sorts of media there are styles of Role play, and of course made with intent. 300 for example, there is some nasty stuff in there. we were soilders you watch a guy's legs being pulled apart. band of brothers, which I just finished, .. the holocost victims, or the cut off member wounded and bleeding. WW2 being a fact everyone should be aware of, we obviously make video games about it because (unfortunately so) it's something of an entertainment thing, to play the hero's that saved the free world. But my point is, there are movies, even those pg 13 that push the limits in this sort of direction. Rping torture, is no different Imho, I think if you play it right, and in a graceful manner. where is the difference? a mayday crash where you see people burnt and charred from a flight crash. (very informative show). Some people RP to play the role, while, I myself choose not to play that sort of character here, I play a drow elsewhere, and your immersed in that sort of thing, torture, plots, betrayals, and backstabbings.... I really can't blame it at all.... Anyways, the thread has gotten off the bandwagon. it's about bringing fear and pain into our characters lives --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I've always thought about the topic, alot really, with spells like fireball, or horrids wilting such things could get really nasty. I think the best source for "how we should see it" are the novels, the novels are source but they are indeed dramatizations. sort of with everything. now I don't want to go into too much detail as to ruin any books, but I recommend someone pick up FR novel, and see how things go. Some are graphic in some areas some are not, but for the most part I think them mostly teenager safe, maybe a good area to go by? edit: removed a comment on rape, as it is illegal here and hasn't been brought up, *buries it again*
