question: since when did everyone in the D&D universe turn into moralistic (is that even a word?) fine upstanding citizens ? I create a character that is very similar dressed to someone coming from a desert climate (wearing very little clothing) ... walk into the inn in isinhold ... and all she gets is called whore this, hooker that, even men .. .men! shying away! because she wears skimpy outfits? c'mon .... all i wanted to do is create a character .. get some fun conversations with others, and maybe go do something,
.. and no one will because she wears something similiar to a swim-suit ? ... wow ....
im so confused ....
wow ... are we comparing d&d to something akin to the medival times? or a fantasy setting? lets take a look at fantasy artworks of artists like Boris Vallejo, Larry Elmore, Julie Bell , Frank Fenzeeta, Gerald Brom, Lockwood !
c'mon .. i just wanted to have fun .. not get berated by ... almost everyone i ran into ...

First thing, calm down. Take a deep breath.
Second thing, you have to realize that in general, a person in desert climes is fully robed and covered head to toe to prevent sunburn and sand getting where it doesn't need to.
Thirdly, most characters come from lands that are not hot, arid, and full of sand, and as such, do not know that what you wear, albeit odd, is actually normal.
Oh... And don't use artists as points of reference... If you hadn't noticed 98% of "fantasy women" are scantilly clad and really serve no purpose other than eye candy.

If you hadn't noticed 98% of "fantasy women" are scantilly clad and really serve no purpose other than eye candy. that's how all my fantasy women are! j/k Aodhan Anyways, don't fret it, RP the way you want to RP your character. I sw the I dream of Genie outfit you had on, it looked pretty cool. Often people confuse how a character would react in FR setting with today's standards. Like when someone is calling for equal rights for half orc PCs in a land where orcs routinely raid and pillage the land. it happens. Go with it, and stick it out and you will likely run into people who give you a fair shake if you RP your character well. Unfortunalty, OOC thoughts interfere with IC thoughts, and 99.9% of the time when you see a scantily clad female PC, it's some young kid wanting to look at his PCs jiggly bits jiggle, so most people figure that's what's going on, and that's what comes out IC. good luck! hmmm...now tat I think about it, I think I am going to create a scantily clad female PC...WEE! *hic*

And if I might add to what Aodhan said, although my main char actually defends such cases (*snickers*, actually he did defend her after she was gone from the middle of the town), it's up to everyone to say how his character will react. IC reactions are better dealt with IC consequences. I can understand the frustration but just react the way you think your character would react if she felt what I guess she perceives as prejudice or backwater way of thought. And most of all, have fun with your character! Don't let IC things spoil it try to find a way to turn what you might think inconvinient to something that will create some interesting RP (arguments etc.)

To me there's a difference to being dresses sexy and look like a s.lut What little I got to see of your character she, I'm sorry to say, looked like a s.lut. Now my character Aren is very uptight and she's extremely prober and shy, she'd call you those things, surely. But also I'd think such things OOCly about the character. It comes down to myself being a woman and seeing someone more naked than dressed, and often (not saying -you- are) played by a male, makes me feel like my gender is being degraded to just a piece of meat to be sold/displayed. If you want to play a halfnaked character by all means do so, just expect what might come. I did at another server play a halffiend (most her abyssal blood from a succubus) she was called a s.lut by most but it was expected, in fact I'd have dared to call the others for bad RPers if they was just accepting her when she walked up in almost nothing more than undies as her combat outfit (img.photobucket.com/albums/v492/Toreavamp/Tieffy3.jpg)Love Hanne

I'm in the same boat. I caught much flak for wearing a leapordskin bra and short-shorts. But most of it was "Aren't you freezing??"
And frankly, I came aboard knowing my character was provocative in many ways, and I expected (encouraged? dared?) IC antagonism.

if women act one way and men the same does it matter? Look at Simbul and elminster or anybody remember Red Sonja and all the lovers she took? A woman adventurer is like any other adventuerer...a risk taker and gambler, or else she would be like 90% of the Realms and farm. I would think a woman dressed provocatively would be a sen as more of a worshiper or even priestess of one of the decadent deity's than a *s.lut'*. And truth be said, back in the day there were guilds of "working women" who would IMHO be a valuable network/ally of the thieves guild.

Well, there's dressing provocatively, then there's dressing for the red light district. Case in point, take a look at this: Now, is she dressed provocatively? I would have to say, yes. Low cut front, bare back, but would you call her sl.utty? Probably not. Enough is covered to leave enough to the imagination. Next is your a-typical Royo type fantasy pic: Is she dressed provocatively? Yes. Now, take away the sword and the nifty owls in the background and place her in a spit-on-the-map rustic farming town in a cold northern region. Cleric? Priestess? Don't think so. There are ways of dressing provocative without walking around practically half naked.

or a warrior who follows sharess, maybe a barbarian of Unther who eschews clothes as too damm civilized. This is a time when there was not working showers and such...i would see nudity as more of a thing rather than some crazed 20th century sex thing. I think the pcs who called the pc in question a whore were more in the wrong than the other way around. Letting our enlightened(said with heavy sarcasm) veiws into the game and men playing women as a peices of meat...or vice-a-versa is wrong...an effictive rper plays what the pc should feel and not what we would feel. Guldars sense of justice and blantant racism towards dwarfs, well, i sure dont share that...i dont dislike many peaople and the ones i do it is not for their color, relegion, or even politics....

If we are so set on them not wearing these things, then why even offer the chainmail bikini? hafta disagree with you, Jen, though i usually agree with you, i think you are looking at this from a diffrent point of veiw than normal. It seems to me this is the age old debate what makes a ho an ho and a housewife a housewife....i personnally think a woman is a woman and the devil be dammed on what they wear as long as it is right for that situation...a "rustic" stop in Isnhold that is known to have a multitude of adventuers laden with gold would be a perfect stop for a lass dressed like this.

Practically speaking, a chainmail bikini offers almost no protection at all. It is mainly a look thing. Except, of course, in the gaming world, where a chastity belt and leather strap around the chest seem to offer the same amount of protection as splint mail... Anyway... Going back to the original stuff of this, and to repeat... A person from the desert will always be fully covered, head to toe, in the lightest robes possible. Only exiles, criminals, and the women of the harems wear less on a daily basis. Unless you're a Beach Bunny and are easily confused between a beach and a desert and don't really care, you should research this kind of stuff. Honestly, now... If you're coming from something other than temperate climes, do a little research. A desert is still a desert, a jungle still a jungle, and an ice covered tundra still an ice covered tundra in the real world as it is in the fantasy.

Heh, I kind of find it funny that it's the men wanting us halfnaked, I just wonder when are the same men going to dress halfnaked and hot too. Those asspants is one of the most sexy things for a man, instead of the normal pelvises which makes it look like you're big babies wearing a diaper (though I suppose sometimes there could be a truth in t hat *hides far away from the men*).
I'd actually very much like to point out Zashieda, she was wearing very little but it was always done with a certain left over to the fantasy, as far as I remember her outfits. Though as said in my previous post, I don't as so see a trouble with people going more naked than dressed, as long as they don't go whining over the reactions from people.
Another thing to take into account is what feeling you as player would sit left with when you're less than dressed character has been sitting flirting with someone and you then afterwards realises that person is very young. If you don't know what it's like I can assure you all that it's a very very unpleasant feeling you sit with and you usually very quickly learn your lesson to differ between sl.ut and sexy.

I'm pretty sure I'm not allowed to dress authentic-jungle, man...I know for a fact I'd get in trouble if I posted Nat. Geographic pics of Amazon basin "attire", I imagine my character is under similar constraints in-game...most of them jungle folk dress in outfits I'd label as "pair o' napkin"...

skimpy outfits for PCs have been documented time and time again in the fantasy setting. Forgotten Realms included...not to say a PC can't chastise someone for wearing a certain outfit. But I would say it would be pretty normal to see skimpy adventuring outfits..even in the frozen tundras.

Feh, feeeeeh! It's apparent that it's the good ol' male/female opposite mentality on things. You guys are a bunch of horndogs. *takes a horndog label and puts it on herself* Anyways, long story short, people shouldn't get up in arms about people's reactions In Character. Even in fantasy games, people get chastised for one reason or another. You can always have it that your character doesn't give one fink as to what others say and think of what your character wears. The more uncaring your character is about it, the less other characters may say anything... least to your character's face.

Hehehehe - I do really think one can wear anything at will with a reasonable roleplay reason - and of course deal with the problems.
You enter in your full red monk order clothes in Thay? oops
;p
And of course you can learn from your mistakes: Keetena (my main character, priestess and bard of Sune) for example, liked use large cleavages and insinuating clothes, she liked show skin and had the max possible in deflection and dodge armor class, but learned she would never be respected without change ways - so a very good time ago she walks completely dressed, sometimes with only her face at view.
