Have some fun facts you would like to remember for rp but hate writing in the journal? Here is one way to do so.
Save your character to your local vault. There will be two files a bic. and notepad. Both will have the character's name.
The notepad file contains all your personal notes you wrote in game. Copy the information then open the note pad add and edit.
When you bring the character in game again it will be there. I would recommend before the copy and paste to save a copy if what already has been written in another folder out side of NWN.

Even if you don't save your character to local vault, the .txt file will be in your local vault folder for your charactername if you've ever added any information to the journal in-game. The interface in-game is just a rudimentary text editor for this file.
Not only can players use this to save information in-game and out-of-game (and back up this file!) but DMs can use this to keep in-game/out-of-game journals for NPCs they possess, as any notes written to the journal while possessing an NPC will be written to a text file (in local vault) with the name of that specific NPC instead of to the DM avatar's in-game journal. Note, however, that the in-game journal will save into whichever NPC or DM avatar's journal that is possessed at the time the journal is closed, so unpossessing an NPC while the journal screen is open will cause the DM Avatar's journal to be overwritten by the NPC's journal, if I recall correctly. (Some testing may be required on the part of a person that wants to apply this, such as to copy one journal from a DM avatar to an NPC while in the DM client. I haven't been in the DM Client for a long time so please test first if you want to try this. Perhaps back up any important journal .txt file first.)
I have not tested to see if familiars have their own journals while being player-possessed.
