Um, actually... Black was the cheapest color for many fabrics. ............. Anyway. Light colors/jewel tones from the top. Dark/dull colors/blacks from the bottom. Light colors/jewel tones = wealthy, dark/dull colors/blacks = poor. -pokes- Don't provoke me to derail the subject! Cloth weren't shipped in the middle-age, with the exception of the -very- rare and expensive silk. It was made of what you had, where you lived. What you talk about is the renaissance. But that's another matter entirely. The whole world is opening up, ships have improved, and the access to dying matter has likewise improved. As to religious orders. The only one I know who used black, was the Dominican order, the Black Friars, or "Hounds of our Lord." Initially just a black cape over a white robe. The Dominicans was founded in middle-ages, around 1200 and whatever, and was an intellectual order, fighting heresy and paganism fervently. My subject! Mine. ;D *Just proved the stereotype that women know too much about clothing*

Tihi, c'mon, as long as everybody is looking for people wearing black. The evils who don't want to be seen can just put on something brighter and they're in the clear You'd be surprised what you can get away with if you're wearing white and gold plate with a bright blue cloak Now, I have always played good chars though, so the matter is moot in my case *nods*

Black isn't evil, it's Chaotic Evil. Purple is Neutral Evil. Red is Lawful Evil. Green is True Neutral. Silver is Chaotic Good. Blue is Neutral Good. Gold is Lawful Good.
I don't recall the colors of Chaotic and Lawful Neutral, or if they were even mentioned, but this comes out of the 'Gord of Greyhawk' books by Gary Gygax.
Seems there was this cosmological war between the various planes, and there was this kind-of-hero and his buddy, and... oh well, it was five books, so I doubt I can synopsize it.
They were printed under the TSR logo, and to my knowledge were the first D&D novels. (Now that I think about it, the first two and the following three were actually publised by two different companies.)

Heh..My character wears black and silver for now. ;D He used to wear many different colours..It is quite hard to find the colours that suits you well.

black is the most abused color ever... i dont like it brown, dark green or dark red, dark blue would be so much more cool

Think of this from a practical standpoint. Black hides a multitude of sins, dirt, blood, etc. It stands to reason that it would be well used by adventurers since they don't always have time to stop and do the laundry. It also stands to reason that it would be widely used if it were the cheapest dye available.

In a fantasy world where an apprentice wizard can make permanent dyes with simple cantrip spells, it stands to reason that colorful clothing is abundant.
Look at the way colored cloth is prized by the most primitive of peoples. Feathers, exotic animal hides, and shell beads have always been hoarded for the color they can add to otherwise dull clothing, and as soon as any kind of coloring becomes possible for a culture it becomes popular.
I submit that abundant colored clothing is one aspect of the fantasy that is realistic. Your local tailor should know a wizard who can concoct dyes, or be able to change the color of your new peach gown with a wave of the wand. Perhaps it costs more; but, you ain't a peasant, you're an adventurer.

A) Not every adventurer is a wizard, and B) Fighter types rarely have 24/7 access to a wizard. C) Just because an apprentice wizard CAN do this does not mean he is going to make him/herself into a seamstress... in fact, I would think the majority of wizards would consider it beneath them and charge exorbitant prices to do if they would even bother at all. Black isn't evil, just common.

This is pretty much my standpoint on the matter, Black is pratical where as colours like white / orange / yellow etc etc, are very impractical as daily stains can be seen easier on them.

Kenji wears black/gray.... he is not by any means evil. In fact he is the most honourable person you might meet... except for Gorstag, who is a saint.

I started a new char today who just so happens to be evil and wore black with which some char's have already assumed that because he has worn black he means trouble. The only evil character I played was a Bard Assasin, I played him friendly and poor, with garish colored clothing while performing. People loved him. Then, I would switch into my zhent gear (which was black ) and go do evil things *shrugs* I was "hiding in plain sight" for the zhentarim. So my .02 on this is you don't have to wear black to be evil... or all moody, emo or goth. In fact, I rather like the aspect of sucking people in... letting them think you are friendly, only to turn on them at somepoint..... er... just as long it's not my characters
