*sitting with his feet dangling over the edge of a steep drop off, on his favorite hill, his head down, his hood up, and his Claymore laying on the ground next to him*
I remember the day Madame Lorana told me to check on my mother, "Lord Sexton's appointment time is over Seamus, tell him to get off your mother and get his ugly ass up here. But use the courtiers words you were taught Seamus. He pays well so I won't have you offend him with gutter talk". "Where is she, Madame Lorana", I asked. "She's downstairs in the red room, Seamus", she replied. "Can you have Lilly get her", I pleaded. "Lilly is busy. Now, GET DOWN THERE SEAMUS, another is already waiting for your mother and she needs time to clean up, so quit whining and get going".
I walked slowly downstairs to the red room, and hesitated at the door. I listened at the door, but knew that the spells placed on the room would keep me from hearing anything. I took a deep breath, knowing what I would see when I opened the door. But I was 13 now, and I was strong enough not to throw up anymore.
I opened the door quietly, not suprised to see a naked man with a cat o' nine-tales standing at the foot of the large bed, and my mothers feet shackled to the footboard before him. But something was wrong this time, in his right hand he held a bloody dagger.
"Lord Sexton, I regret to inform you that your time is up, and Mistress Elizabeth has a another appointment scheduled for today. Madame Lorana will be pleased to schedule another appointment for you at your earliest convenience. If you will dress and come with me, my Lord" my voice breaking half way through my speech.
"GET OUT OF HERE, BOY!" he yelled , as he turned and walked towards me. That's when I saw my mother lying naked on the big bed, a torn sheet stuffed in her mouth, covered in her own blood, with what looked like a thousand cuts in addition to the normal bruises I expected to see on her body, and one gaping wound in her chest. The man's front was smeared with my mothers blood and he looked like a demon straight from the Abyss.
"Wait" he said, "there's been an accident, come here and help me". But I knew what I saw was no accident. "You killed my mother, YOU KILLED MY MOTHER!", I screamed, my right hand pointing at the man's blood smeard face". And then it happened, a cold ray of blue light lept from my hand and struck the man square in the face. He stopped dead in his tracks, and fell backward to the to the floor. Not understanding what happened, I jumped on the man and pounded him with my fists, but he didn't move, and ice covered his face. He was dead.
I stood up, slowly walked to the implements table, and picked up the keys to the shackles. I then walked to my mother, pulled the sheet from her mouth, and unlocked the shackles from her feet and wrists. I cleaned the blood off her face and body, and did my best to untangle her beautiful red hair. I covered her with a clean sheet from the linen closet, then left the red room.
Like a zombie, I walked up the back stairs to our room. I washed her blood from my face and hands in the washbowl that she would normally use to clean up in after an appointment. Then I changed my clothes, and crawled under the bed to retrive my mothers jewelry box. Inside was her favorite comb scattered among the jewelery that her clients had given her in appreciation of her talant. I picked up the comb and started to walk back downstairs to the red room, determined to make sure there were no tangles in her hair when she was laid to rest, because I knew she wouldn't like being seen that way.
That's when the numbness wore off, and I sat down on the stairs and began to cry. Then I realized, I had killed a Lord of Luskan and knew my fate. I would be drawn and quartered in the city square for the entertainment of the people as part of the mid summers eve festival, along with all the other murderers. Justice is bought by the wealthy in Luskan, and I knew the son of a whore wouldn't be able to outspend the familly of a lord for it.
I returned to my mothers room, picked up her jewlery box, and walked out the kitchen door into the streets. The last thing I heard was Madam Lorana, screaming my name.
