Just a question. If I wear a magic helm, can I still use an Ion Stone? The bonuses would be different, but I want to make sure they do not use the same item slot. I would hate to spend 46K of hard earned gold on somethign I can not use.

i wear a helmet and use a iounstone in all fights i get into. they do not occupy the same item slot on the char. in fact iounstones have their own slot all together and they do not have to be equiped, you simply activate one.
the only limit is that iounstones will effectively overwrite each other's effects, so only one can be active at a time.

Ioun Stones is a miscellaneous item, and as such, they do not require you to "equip" them. Please note that you cannot use more than 1 stone at a time, though.

ioun stones are small orbs of various colors with various effects that hover in a circle above your head and while it does so it bestows magical bonuses on you.
in nwn the graphics used to simulate a iounstone makes it look like it's spiraling around your entire body though... nwn wasn't first desgined with that item in mind.

Well, I did buy the Ion Stone, and it does work while I wear a helm. Originally I was going to get the stone that grants a +2 Cha, but decided to get the stone that grants +2 Wis. Make my character more balanced that way, but never ultimately aswered the question if ring of +2 Cha. would stack with a Ion Ston +2 Cha.... Ah well. The only sad thing is though, when I sleep the stone automatically deactivates. Therefore, I do not get any bonus spells for having a higher Wis. that the stone grants me. Anyone want to buy a Ion Stone of +2 Wis.. only slightly used! ;D ;D

Have a look around, or ask IC, where's the fun for these people to spend all this time building if they're just going to tell you out right? But I do believe in hints, it's not too far from where you start

In DnD Ioun stones are permanent bonus items that will stack with each others. There is for example this ancient Netherese lich archmage that has two dozens of them circling on his head, giving him totally uber abilities (not that thousands of years old lich wouldn't be nearly godlike anyway).
In NWN they're "magical effects" that can be dispelled and that dissappear when you rest. Still being magical effects they do stack with whatever equipment and potions too, just stay away from the evil dispelling mages or bye bye ioun stone effect.

they stack with rings and potions and anything else that gives an ability score bonus. but there is a limit: you can never achieve a total bonus to an ability score of more than +12.
example: ring of str +3 ring of str +2 belt of giant's str +3 gauntlets of ogre power +2 ioun stone +2 str
then you will reach a limit and if a mage tries to buff you further with bull's strength, nothing will happen.
