I just thought I'd bring this topic up for discussion, see what everyone thinks.
Due to the constraints of real life, it is sometimes necessary to log out in the middle of a party adventure. Some people play this out, giving an excuse for their characters to leave the group, whilst others just type "//gotta log, sorry".
Of course, if you have to log suddenly and unexpectedly then a short ooc message is fine, but if you know you're going to have to log in a couple of minutes, then why not come up with an IC reason to leave?
For example, when I play Finbarr it's easy to leave a group; maybe he has to head back to town or he'll be late for supper and his cheese soup will get cold, or he has an appointment to give someone a haircut/head polish, or my favourite, he runs away screaming when a party mage summons a creature next to him without warning.
Does anyone else have any good lines for excusing themselves from a party?

Well I usually come up with some sort of ' I have other business to attend' but the specifics are spur of the moment ideas. A good idea though, works much better than the 'Sorry, gotta go. CYA' version

Lets see what have I used before, hmmm....
Sprained my ankle and unable to keep up
Ill with a cold/flu
Late for my duties/chores
I promised that I would meet some one at the caravan First time in town so I can not be late.
Hole in my boot
Yes err.. well many more, hmmm... definitely a pattern here. Often just something off what is going on or said in the party

*feels back of pack*
By Silverbeards Axe's.. Dat fool hit me in da back and broke me last ale bottle.. Dis trip be cursed and me going back to gets some more triple bock me is.
Or
When going to be leaving and some asks me to go with them..
Sorry lad/lass.. Promised me would wait fer a client fer a comission. Me word is me honor so me needs ta stays here.
This works good for when lower levels ask me to go to the crypt or places I know are not meant for me anymore....
Then walk off and get to a place where no one is going to see me log off or back on and then log... Hate when people just appear out of thin air in the middle of the inn...

i usually make an excuse unless i'm really pressed for time but i remember when i was grouping with chril way back when i first started, he had to head out and he said "I have a meeting to keep *slips into the shadows and disappears.*"
chril usually finds a good way to exit on another occasion he actually used a smoke bomb on me and logged. lol it was just like a magician would.
i find it depends on the group i am with, if i'm with a group of characters i don't know or care about i'll simply stealth away and not say a word. but if i'm with a group of people my character does care about then i'll make an excuse.
i completely agree with you on the logging somewhere that's appropriate helgrin, i like to log in some corner, find a nice dark shadow to stealth and log or log at a transition since i could have come from upstairs....who knows if i was up there or not.

Easiest one I usually give is that my character is tired and needs to head off to rest. Next one is to go to a different town to meet someone (reason dependent on the character). One I typically use if I've not been on long is my character needs a bath.
If in a dungeon I try to hang on long enough to get out of the dungeon area, then when "safe" say that she'll get rest in another town and will catch up with them later. I basically try not to head out to dangerous spots if I don't have much time to play anyway so I usually don't need to log off right in the middle.

Or *eyes light up with a sudden thought* Damnit...forgot bout that *trails off near the end as he walks farther away*

If I am not being paged for rl that I have to run promptly an occ will be all I have time for...
If I know when I must run...
Tam will start her drinking... and become ill fit for adventures and wonder off drunk to where the wind will blow her... which is most often the nearest inn... Tam's drinking is her excuse for not being around days at a time... can't adventure when passed out... Other times she may disappear without so much as a see ya... as my archaic system just freezes and it takes me forever to get back up and running...

It's not like a barbarian has high priorities other than what is immediately happening. As Torgeir, I let others know that he is leaving if he finds the current situation too idle or if he is suddenly driven by impulse."I will be leaving now. Farewell *nods*" or something like "I tire of standing here. I will find my own fight." For RPing a not so social barbarian I find these not so social departures work fine.
As for Rhyllin, well, he would just *wave a dismissive hand* the take his leave, as if you are no longer important in his eyes. Works well for a rogue who doesn't really care about who he insults, more so for an elf who thinks he's superior to others out of his race.
I don't know.... what does anyone know....... Trogdor?
