So I know many people change the looks of their armours and swords when they get their hands on them. But what I was wondering that if you get your hands on a specific magic item do you still change it's appearance? For example if you found the Sunblade, the Frostbrand or the Plate Armor of the Deep, they are unique items with their own histories. So what do you all think, should they be modified to fit the character's style or should they remain as they are?

Stay as they are unless its a DM driven change. As you said these are unique magic items crafted with a specific purpose or individual in mind which is why each has its own story.
The exception would be if a DM becomes involved in helping to magically alter the item.

If you can buy it in a store, go ahead and change it. If not (which pretty much means a dm gave it to you) don't. Now if you had an item that you had before a dm changed it, then technically i would think that you could still change the look to whatever you want.
All i have to say is that if I took the time to design a nice looking suit of armor for a player and they changed it, well i'd be a bit disappointed.

While we have never made an official remark about this, the courtesy expressed above is much appriciated.

If I came across an item in realife that was one of a kind and finely crafted I would not add any alterations to it. Doing so would be destroying the very essence of the person who made the unique item.
For example: I come across the Mona Lisa and say, hey, I don't like this, but wait, let's give her a mustache, there that's better.
That would be horrible. So I carry these feelings with me into the RP. Even a chaotic evil person would realize and gain respect for a finely crafted item, and if she came across a unique item I doubt that she would change it.
