Just another thought too:
If you're stood there in detect mode because its the easy way of setting your character to walk rather than run your rolls will benefit unduly and could have consequences that change the outcome for OOC reasons. Just more food for thought.

doing what i did in the military, yeah, one of the first things they teach you is be still! even if you are spotted, most peoples eyes will gloss over you as we are like most predators and are attracted to movement. plus, you ever been hiking and walk off path into a feild? sheesh, a simple crouch and a guy that is 6 foot even and weighs in at a big mans 240 can just duck down and not be seen with ease, mush less a hin or a dwarf. I kow Guldar rarely used stealth outside caves cuase he was a caver but with his 55 or so he was rarley seen when using it. i always attested it to his smaller than normal dwarf size, his staying hidden behind things, and never did i try and walk out into a place without at least camofluage and one with the land spell as only magic could attest to the fact you could get so close to someone hostile. just my two cents but what i have seen, most people use stealth pretty good now. and rarely have i sen it abussed though i stuck with a core group cuase i was a jerk, lol, so i might just be bias.

Yeah, have to agree with the obliviousness of people factor. Ever sit in the top of a tree no more than 10 feet of the ground? I have, Only About one out of every 8 people ever noticed I was there, and I was wearing pretty bright colors.
Also, I've played games of capture the flag/infiltration in the woods... (old boy scouting days) and I have been in situations where being spotted was almost a given and not been noticed. Did you know that even in full moonlight and wearing a light red shirt, if you hug a tree, a person 20 feet away most likely wont notice you?
Anyways just my experience to offer as evidence.

Moonlight changes the way colors show up anyway. You get shades of grey and sometimes blue, but you don't get a bunch of vibrant hues like you do during the day. I know in the LARP, even with the bright white stripe down my chest, people could not see me if I stood still.

You know, she posted a picture of herself with the white strip in the pictures thread and even had it as her forum avatar for a while.
Unfortunately, she also posted a picture of her boyfriend. What a buzzkill, man.

lol - That outfit was nothing... The race i played had a mating season... Every April and September.... I had an outfit I sewed together with patches of gold and white fur for the top and little more then a loin cloth for hte bottom... I was asked to tone it down and not look quite so naked....
But I digress...

I'd hit on you but you have a boyfriend. So I just have to announce that I would if you didn't. Or something.

There's SneakingYoda, ShadowCatJen, Valkyrie, and Toreavamp, as well as lilshabba (the female one). I may have missed some too, but those are the ones that come to mind that you missed. And there are probably some I've also omitted under the golden rule of the Internet: male until proven otherwise.

Right then....
When invisible, you are not silenced. An invisible horse would still be heard be it walking or saddle creaking. They are not stealthy creatures by any means.
"Seeing" someone due to game mechanics doesn't neccessarily mean you see them, but rather you heard something in that particular direction. In the case four pages back that started this thread, the character would have heard the horse walking. (Note, horses also leave hoofprints...if the character wanted to try to search a road for hoofprints, this is how they could have followed after making a successful search check). This would still have not told them anything more than "You hear a horse walking or galloping by, you can see the dust in the road kicked up, or it's trail, but cannot discern anything about the rider."
Given the wayward expansion of the thread from the topic....ka-chink.
Happy trails! ;D
