Anyone here find making a char a task? well beyond what it should be? I find when I make a char I for some reason lose interest in the idea quickly, I cant umderstand why. THis sounds dorcky but I look into my creation, I try and breath life into them, I can hear their accent. Seem them if they were real, I can see their armor. But when I go to make them they come out like not as I saw them...I dont get it

Like now i'm thinking of a half-orc fighter frome the icewind dales but i'm afriad i'll lose interest and end up making him for nothing...I though of a follower of Cyric, then i'm now thinking of how cool it would be to make a retired soldier of Amn. to be honest I dont know what to do...

lol *take a deep breath* I feel ya bro. In these games it just takes time to develope a character. When you invision a new character I think we tend to think of the "end or final product" and not how a character becomes that envision. A character really is an investment, and can take months and years to really create. We or at least us as americans have really become accustomed to getting things NOW, and it's really a hard thing to overcome. I just came home from the bars on my Birthday...so this wisdom has come from the bottom of a glass of brewhaha...so take it for what its worth but most important..just have fun with it...your story will come in due time Thanks for playing. *passes out* boobs are great!

My current character I started with why he was in Cormyr, and some of how he got there. The key for me, is personality. Knowing how the character will act, and talk. Not really where they are from, what their class is. Goals help too. Having a driving goal really directs your character, and helps in making them interesting to play.
I would keep the background simple too. Allows the character to grow and expand.
Good Luck

This is why I build areas most of the time, so I can place all the char ideas I have in there ;D but not all of them escape out of my mind and are left there.

here's an idea, cause I know what ya mean.
Follow Usurpers lead and drink. Booze always slows an over active mind down, and allows you to cull out the crazy ideas that keep piling up...Cliff Claven of Cheers said it best when he was explaining the benefits of booze to Norm...
"you know how a herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest and weakest member of the herd? and so wolves and lions kill and eat the slowest and weakest members and therefore increase the overall speed and efficency of the herd as a whole. Likewise, our brains can only move as fast as the slowest and weakest brain cells. We all know that beer kills brain cells, and obviously picks off the slower weaker brain cells. That's why we always feel smarter after a couple drinks."
That's good advice.
Avoid the clap.
That's good advice too.
Also, try making a character that instead of having a crazy amazing past, and future prototype is more of a reflection of yourself, and then let his past and future be determined by spontaneous roleplay. Think of a vague image, and nonchalantly work in that direction. That's how Vind came along, and he worked out pretty damn good.
geez...all my advice revolves around booze...you were right Talus, I should start a "Dear Abby" for drunks...

If I made a char like me you would see a raggamuffin dressed elf that did NOTHING he would hate anything involving energy or work unless it directly benafits him ;D

BTW Ziggy dont listen to doug about drinking, not till you are 21 or in college.
Start a vague character. Try not to be specific. THis is how hroth started. Human mercenary from Calimshan. From there I determined his past based on how he developed in game.
And stick with your character. Give them some time to develop and interact with a lot of people because that will give you an idea of how he reacts to different people.

I do drink but I have to be careful my father is an alcoholic and if I go to far over the edge how far do you think I will fall? even his father was an alcholic, i'm also at high risk for diabeties. so that will only kill me nothing to worry about there ;D lol
