I wish I could choose both! Merlin is the quintessential end-all be all magic usin' mo-fo, and if you are particularly referring to his appearance in "Excalibur" then he HAS to be both! But I digress as always... Even going back to the roots of Merlin in Morte d'Art we can see him as both. Wow, what a great question/poll! Are wizzy/druids allowed in Forgotten Realms? Uh-oh... I smell a new trend! Before anyone rushes out to make one, two things: 1. I officially call dibs. 2. Better make sure it's a legal class combo first! ;D I had to vote overall with druid though... shapechanger... that's the ticket!

Druids, I don't consider my self one of the L.A.R.P. folks running around in costumes made by their moms but I did look into the deep aspects of mother nature and the spiritual power to be had in this large world of ours. I mixed most of my belifes off of native american beliefs and celtic.
I tend to regard darwins words of "Survivle of the fitest" a note worthy fact, as that is what I can find so interesting about mother earth, she can be so kind and gentle but at the same time be so fickle and iron fisted about who she choses to let live and to pass on their bloodline.

I pointed it out first! *shakes fist* Fine you can have it, but only because of the possibility of accidental deletion of my vault if I thwart your will ;D

I hear you, when I was about the age where made it's first impact on me I got a feeling, he had way with the arcane world but at the same time he also had a deep respect for nature as most mystics would for that time. If you have ever seen the movie "King Aurther" the newer one Merlin is shown as a tribal shaman of the "barbaric" people.

Anyone ever read The Once and Future King? If you haven't, I wouldn't recommend it. For the most part, the first part is mostly identical in a lot of ways to Disney's Sword in the Stone.
It's been years since I was assigned it in high school, but I remember (and this is based off the light skimming I did of the book--I can't stand British literature, especially that gasbag Charles Dickens) Merlin seemed to give me the impression of a celtic mystic. But that was from only reading half a page here and there.

I put down Wizard, because it is closest to what I think.
I have always thought of him as a Sorcerer of Divine or Draconic Blood (In ancient Breton myths, these were often the same.) In the Morte De Arth, he was portrayed as being from an ancient race, akin to the gods.
Also, Magic was of an Elemental Nature in these tales.
I equate Druids with the Celts, Picts and Gaels, NOT the Bretons from which this story comes.
