I currently have SBC DSL and am thinking of going to the cable modem through Mediacom. Anyone here that can tell me which one i would like better? How will it affect my obsession, i mean hobby, of playing NWN?

I am a fan of cable, but I get really good upload and downloand speeds with it. I have heard that cable has only a slight edge over dsl and I am uncertain if you will even feel the difference between cable and dsl. I would compare two things:
1. Price. If cable will cost you an arm and a leg, you are probably fine with dsl.
2. Upload/Download speed. Compare the two products... if there isn't a huge difference, stick with what you have.
Cheers!

Well I have cable through Media Com. One draw back of Cable is that at peak times you can notice a little bit of slow down. DSL you should never have that from what I understand. But I hate the only DSL company here so, Cable it is. Qwest sucks. (All opinions here are mine and mine alone )

This is what I have heard in terms of cable vs. dsl. I have heard that either one could be faster than the other depending on a few factors. For cable, I have heard that if you are in a neighborhood where there are a lot of users, your connection can get slowed down considerably, but if there are few users, then it can be faster than DSL. For DSL, I have heard that speed is often determined by your distance from the nearest hub and what package you are willing to pay for. Also, for DSL you need to have a land phone line. With Cable, as long as your place is cable accessible, you don't need to purchase any additional packages (I've even heard that if you purchase cable internet that they can't stop the regular signal from coming through, so if you split the line, you could get regular cable tv as well, though i dont know if this is true). Both internets need additional comp equipment. For my cable modem, I went to best buy and purchased a motorola one and was able to turn it in for a rebate if i also signed up with my provider there too.
Really, IMO it doesn't really matter which one you hace, it all comes down to which costs less.

i pay 20 bucks for my dsl ... cheaper is better when its difficult to tell a difference in which is "better". though, i dont think it would really effect playing nwn. i used to play with a 56k and all was good.

I also played on 56K, I wouldn't say all was good, but it wasn't horrible.

i use cable. In Washington I used DSL.
DSL requires you have a home phone. I don't ever use a home phone- I have my cell phone. So I had to buy a phone line just to have DSL. That was pretty costly in my opinion.
With Cable I don't need to buy cable service. I don't even have a TV at the moment. So internet without havign to buy something else in order to get it is a lot cheaper.
And cable is faster and more reliable than DSL

I was just offline for about a week or so, for this very topic. I switched from Verizon DSL to Comcast Digital Cable.
I live in the middle of the "projects" of my city and I am sligthly faster than with my previous DSL.

dsl is a direct link to your provider where cable has many people sharing the line so it gets slowed down alot at peak times and if tons of people have cable in your area thingy

a couple years ago quest dsl and mediacom offered me a free trial service at the same time for a month. for two weeks I kept going to bandwith testing websites and I played everquest at the time to that shows your bandwith connection and mediacom cable was the overall best service even during the prime time hours. but I have a gut feeling they will jack off ...jack up their prices soon for the cable service.
