The average Cormyrian knows that the City of Shade appeared in the Anauroch in 1372. During that Year emissaries from the City of Shade, calling themselves the Princes of Shade, visited realms bordering the Anauroch Desert. The Princes made it known that the City of Shade would seek to restore the Netherese emipre and reclaim lost territory.
Later that year, strange weather phenomena took place in the regions surrounding the Anauroch Desert. Rumors at the time placed the blame for these natural disasters at the feet of Shade.
The Steel Regent and Royal Magician met with Princes of Shade and refused to yield Cormyrian territory. Shade stated that it would reclaim the land by force.
The battlefield between Shade and Cormyr was the city of Tilverton. The city was hastily evacuated as the battle began and subsequently destroyed during the conflict, leaving the shadowy crater known as Tilverton's Scar in its wake.
The battle was a stalemate and costly to both Cormyr and Shade. Since then Shade has not attempted further encroachment into Cormyr.
Cormyrians know that the survivors of Tilverton have established a small town near the site of the original city called New Tilverton.
In 1374 Cormyr sent a military force into the Northern Reach to occupy New Tilverton.
