Lately I have noticed a huge increase in the amount of lag I experience while playing. Granted this came along with all the new victim.... err players but even before when there were 45 players online it wasn't so bad.... My assumption is that many of the new players are just that, new and are not correctly using the direct connect option. Just incase they somehow have missed all the notices. Please use direct connect correctly it helps all of us have a much better gaming experience. Incase you don't know.. 1. you need the IP of the server. You can find this by Highlighting the server and selecting the details option at the bottom of the screen, then copy the numbers on a sheet of paper or whatever is handy. 2. Exit out of the internet multi-player all the way till you can select LAN instead, pick that, now at the bottom of the screen select Direct connect and enter the IP numbers and symbols you wrote down. Most know this I know, but just incase 3. Now you will be able to join the server and lower the lag for yourself and all. 4. Please note there is an option to direct connect while still looking in the internet section of the game... but this still has to go through Gamyspy and that is the part we are trying to bypass! So please be sure to use the LAN instead of Internet to connect. Also the game will remember the last IP you entered into that field so you will only need to enter it once as long as you only play on FRC... and why wouldn't you?.....Hmmm?

Another thing that will help decrease lag is everyone picking up whatever is dropped by their kills. So what if it's a book, animal hide, or a set of plate mail, it NEEDS to be picked up. Leaving things on the ground creates more things for the server to keep track of, thus increasing the lag. If you don't have space/strength to carry something, find a PERSISTANT (meaning it's there all the time, on the ground, generally in the same spot on the map) loot drop (Chests, Bones, Barrels, Cacoons, and anything else of that nature) and drop your excess/unwanteds there.
Also, spawns. It's alright to leave a few if you happen to wander into a place you cannot handle, but running through places and not at least attempting to kill spawns creates lag. The more things spawned at one time, the more, again, the server has to keep track of.
Another thing that will also help is hitching your horses when you aren't using them. It's alright to show them off, but keeping them out, once again, creates more things for the server to keep track of and boom. Lag Monster.
Between these things and the Direct Connect, this will help keep the server pretty lag free.

I noticed some pretty extreme lag last night before the server crashed. All the above suggestions are good. I just wonder if one of our latest updates affected something. I blame the horses But that's because I hate horses.

As mentioned, lots of combinations of things. I think we've had a consistent level of at least 30 players on at all times. Close to a full 55+ at peak times. And lots .... LOTS... of them are new players. Can't tell you how many times I've scrolled over the player character list over the past month or so and go, "Who ARE all these people?" Which means we have lots who are unfamiliar with the general standards that were mentioned above (direct connecting, cleaning spawns, picking up remains). Another I would mention is one that has been spoken of time and time again: WALK PEOPLE! Especially when you are facing off against creatures with area of effect attacks. Say you take on two stink beetles that get off their area attacks. You beat them then run off to the next spawn point. Well, guess what? That area effect spell is still running behind you -thus- taking up some server resources. You've beaten eight beetles, but for some reason there's heavy lag. Gee, could it be the eight area animations of green gas going off in the same area, each with it's own timer that the server has to keep track of could be the reason? Maaaaybe.

Hoofing it in a permanently hasted, +25 Hide/Move Silently, +10 Cloth Super Ninja Suit would be your preferred mode of transportation. ^_^ *hugs Qaud*

Is it possible to reduce the duration of some of these spell effects like the stink beetle gas, ettercap webs, etc.? In my experience these effects usually last much longer than it takes to kill the creature that cast it. I don't mind waiting until the spell expires, but if shortening their duration can help reduce lag on the server then I'm alll for it. They often outlive their 'purpose.'
