Well this is probably something that everyone but myself knew ;D, but it's something I've always been curious about but never bothered to really look up until I found the following while browsing the CandleKeep site. And since the Zhentarim (at least I believe that's the group but I've been known to be wrong lots of time) seem to be plaguing Isinhold lately...
"Zhent" is not a singular or plural form of "Zhentarim." The former refers to people associated specifically with Zhentil Keep, the latter with members of the Black Network. Zhentarim is a term for an organization, like "the Mafia." It does not have a plural because there is only one group called the Zhentarim. You wouldn't say "two mafias walked into my restaurant." You'd say "two guys from the Mafia walked into my restaurant." (quoted from the Candlekeep site) Just thought I'd share.

Time to make things a little more confusing *throws in a word 'Zhentilar'* Any idea what that refers to? The Zhentilar is the standing army of Zhentil Keep also referred to as the Zhent Imperial legion. From source material: "Known for their crack discipline and brutal efficiency, the Imperial Legion is divided into two main branches of service: the Imperial Army and the Imperial Navy. Though the these units are rigidly organized, confusion can result because of the large number of mercenaries and non-human troops employed by Zhentil Keep. Though all of these troops wear the Zhentilar uniform and carry the Zhent banner, they are more often organized under local chiefs or mercenary leaders, who often have very different views than the Zhent commanders on proper unit structure."Direct descriptions: "Zhent: A person from Zhentil Keep or an adjective describing an origin in Zhentil Keep. "Zhentish" is incorrect and brings derision on the user even in places where Zhentil Keep and the Zhentarim are despised. Not all Zhents are members of the Zhentarim.
Zhentilar: A term used to distinguish the military forces of Zhentil Keep from the forces of the Zhentarim. "Zhentilar" refers to the standing Zhent military.
Zhentarim: A member of the Zhentarim secret society or the group as a whole. Zhentarim can be in the Zhent army or not. "

The last series of ranks is pretty much defunct now that the Zhentilar are essentially an arm of the Zhentarim. 'Power of Faerun' has a more uptodate ranking. High Castellan is still used just for Scyllua Darkhope who leads the Zhentilar armies from Zhentil Keep.
