The tale of the Efreet Warlord
Huzuz, the capital of Zakhara, once was attacked by an army of foot soldiers, enslaved desert creatures and fire giants. The army was lead by a powerful Efreet, who wanted to subjugate the Grand Caliph himself. But since the city was well defended by powerful wizards and friendly genies, the war lasted for longer than seven circles of the moon.
There was no end to the battles and the casualties on the attacker's side became more and more. Theories about the Efreeti said they were known for their love to mislead, befuddle, and confuse their foes for enjoyment as well as a battle tactic, once more came true. The Efreet Warlord decided to finesse the Grand Caliph and ordered a messenger to be sent with a proposal of peace to the Grand Caliph, letting him know that because of the spirited defense of the Capital, he would surrender his plans to conquer the City and see the Caliph as a coequal ruler.
As a gift of peace, he offered him a golden lamp, but before he sent the messenger, he forged an insidious plan.
As all Efreeti are capable, he cast a permanent image of himself, to carry the golden lamp, where he himself hid inside. The illusional image of himself, he let it restrict with magical shackles, for everyone to see, that he was indeed unable to move or cast spells - as a proof of honesty.
The defending forces, weakened and exhausted, would gladly let the messenger pass and when they saw, the Efreet Warlord, bound with magical bonds and a golden lamp as a gift, they lead him to the temple, where the Grand Caliph resided.
Chance brought it about, that the seer of the Grand Caliph, a woman born blind and although unable to see, had her senses extended by divine magic and she sensed the illusion of the Efreet just before he climbed the stairs of the temple. When she became aware of the deceit, she let the Court High Wizard know, who himself prepared a sealing spell and just when they arrived on top of the temple's stairs, the Court High Wizard trapped the Efreet inside the lamp.
The Efreet, before the lamp was sealed, so the tale is told, vowed vengeance.
He would destroy the city, and each and everyone inside it, should he be freed. And to his liberator, he promised rewards power and gold beyond imagination.
It is since then, that many powers have tried to free the Efreet, to stand in his favour and become powerful and rich at one go.
