I was wondering what it takes to become a master weaponsmith on this server? I know in the past I've seen characters such as gardrak and that cleric of gond be a sort of 'go-to' type of character to rp create unique things for characters that invest time, mats, and some dm oversight... sometimes summons, sometimes weapons, etc.
I'm unsure what is considered a good amount of skill points to invest in craft weapon and what else I should do outside of the rp.
My goal is to have the character focus on creating interesting, non-standard weapons (like he would likely not entertain the thought of crafting a greatsword or scimitar or bastard swords as it's too "boring"... bur rather do something unique with melee items like whips (especially whips), dire maces, kamas/warfans/claws, cep weapons, light flails... mostly unused weapons). This is a long term thing and would be his primary focus in the mercantile sphere of red wizardry.

Basically, some players are more direct in asking with DM assistance in creating unique items. If a character is trying to craft something and appears to have enough skill to create such an item, a DM may occasionally assist the player in having their character make a unique item.
If your intent is to solely create unique items, not deal in standard crafting, you should expect to be limited to the frequency and degree to which a member of the staff will be at your beck-and-call to create such items. No character should have DMs waiting hand-and-foot to make unique items regularly. Any character might be able to produce an item on occasion if the DM believes their character has appropriate skill to do so and wishes to assist with the item.
The short answer is probably this: It's a bad idea to make a character focus solely on items the character cannot produce in-game through standard crafting methods. Such a character is always going to require DM attention and a player of such a character is likely to feel neglected because their high requirements for DM attention are not going to be met.

By the sound of it, hes not trying to create special unique items, but rather just nonstandard and uncommonly made weapons. Specializing in things like whips, flails, etc. Alternative weapins as opposed to longswords and scimitars. He wants to know at what point are you conisdered a "master"

Keep in mind the items crafted done do not necessarily have to have an in-game presence. I have employed a variety of player crafters fashion a host of items. A spinning wheel, silver sickle, adamantine needle, a compass and a small man carved from a gem. None are DM items just props that I used for spells and summonings. I just gave the crafter the material an amount of gold in the order of thousands and the rest was just RPed. Of all the items fashioned only the spinning wheel has a inventory item. The other player was kind enough to write up a description in a book and that I use for my spinning wheel when I need it. So you don't always need to involve DM's at all in the fashioning of small stuff.
