I saw a thread pop up and I wanted to comment outside the thread so as to not interrupt it. Sorry if I seem like a nit-picking, party-pooper, but I wanted to mention that lawyers don't really exist in Forgotten Realms.
According to "Elminster presents Forgotten Realms"
Page 61
"The Realms does not have lawyers, robed and wigged or otherwise. There are some "advocates," paid orators who will speak in court (always in the presence of an accused, not appearing in their stead) and who might know something of the law and can give advice for the accused. Some advocates are real performers who mimic the voices of people, act out scenes, tell jokes, and engage in furious debate in court-which, being great entertainment, is seldom cut short even by angry judges or rulers, because the commoners like it."
Feel free to continue as you please, I just wanted to make mention.

There are a couple of NPC 'Attorneys-at-Law' in Marsember. I know they've been involved in DM overseen property transactions, whether their role extends that, I don't know.
Any society that has laws is going to have 'lawyers' in its broadest sense, i.e. those who interpret and negotiate the law and legal system for others professionally or otherwise, they're just unlikely to be similar to the ones we have today in the modern world. Indeed what a lawyer does changes quite a lot in our own world from country to country depending on the origins of the law, i.e. it developed from English Common Law such as in the US or England or Roman or Napoleonic Law on parts of continental Europe, and various other historical factors.
Anyway I digress, but simply put I think there would be people who navigate the legal, though as Lady Frost suggests they are unlikely to be anything like modern notions of a lawyer. I'm no great shakes on FR lore but is it correct that there is no professional legal class in Faerun?

Bet I can provide counter reference to Elminster. Who wants to flex the lore muscles?

Nah, I'll make it easy...check Tyr's worshipper entry and lets try to put 2 and 2 together.
Btw, Forgotten Realms is notorious on being contradicting.
PS, Elminster is notorious for being a class-a cynic of /many/ venues.

People can appeal to Lords and others, but they generally have the final say up until the King (or currently the Steel Regent) steps in and says something, at which point the matter is settled. If a local lord isn't inclined to listen to any case, has their mind made up, or is otherwise influenced, there may be no 'legal case' at all, and they can make a declaration of any sort within their powers.

Dwarven insanity and delusions of grandeur always trumps any reality based arguments or evidence!

The fact something doesn't currently exist doesn't mean someone can't create it. In fact, not to be lawyerish myself, but the word "create" is generally applied to that which did not previously exist until it was "created." 🙂
