Long story short, I need to go for a new laptop, but we have Windows 10 coming around the corner.
Has anyone had a chance to fiddle with 10 yet? Does it even look like NWN will work on it?
I don't want to do Windows 8, but if NWN doesn't work on 10 ...
Yarg! I know asking this now is silly, but if I go for something with Windows 8 I'd like to hit the market when "Windows 8 compatable" laptops start going on sale.
. . . I could always upgrade from 8 to 10, but that would mean more money out of pocket. *shakes fist at Microsoft and their money making ways*
What do you guys suggest? Wait for laptops with MS 10 already there and risk not being able to run NWN or just hit up a MS 8 laptop, be able to run NWN, and pull my hair out over all the other ugly stuff that 8 offers?

I haven't messed around with Windows 10 yet, but if you do get a Windows 8 laptop soon windows 10 is a free upgrade for all Windows 7 and Windows 8 users.

Windows 8 really isn't all that different from 7. You can do a few things to set the behavior so it approximates earlier Windows versions better if you want to go that route. As for the free upgrade, I believe that's slated to drop on July 29th of this year for all windows 7+ users. I have yet to use it but I doubt you'd have many more issues running NWN in 10 than you would in 8. Edit: Okay, I misspoke a little. It is quite different, but to the casual end-user it isn't too big a difference if you set preferences and things in a certain way. Here is a little program to adjust the shell for newer operating systems. A quick search can help find some other resources for customization.

On top of all of this, Windows 10 is meant to be very much an improvement upon Windows 7's main functionality, as opposed to Windows 8's focus on a mobile platform. They will also be doing their price plan differently. Rather than several versions of Windows 10, there will be a singular version with constant major updates. This is going to be the last windows, and will likely have a wide compatibility platform for that same reason. Ive toyed with it a bit and honestly if you've used 7, youll be perfectly fine in 10. If you're getting 8, get something with a touchscreen and it won't be bad at all. (spoken from experience)

You will need to update 8 to 8.1 to upgrade to win 10. The free upgrade must be done in the first year as well. you Win 7 and win 8.1 license will also be deactivated.

Yar. I forgot they made 8.1 different a bit to Windows 8. I haven't touched either 8 or 8.1 with a ten and a half foot pole myself. Heh heh.

I run 8.1 on a laptop, where it doesn't really matter (it was more bothersome to try to get a cheap one with win7). It's (of course) extended with She'lls Classic Extension, so that I don't have to bother with apps and metro at all. No other computer has that abomination installed. Except for one computer at work that had to have Win Server 2012 installed (wich looks too much like 8.1!!!!!)
2 of my computers (one at home and one at work) right now have been "accepted" for win 10 - they have now a small icon in the systray where it says "download win10". But... if I was to do that, I'd either try out on a free harddrive, or a Virtual Machine. I'm so not going to sacrifice any of the machines, just in case I hate it.
I'm not so sure it's going to work with NWN on Win10, it barely works for me on the win8.1 laptop. Win 7 on the other hand - no issues. When the time comes, I could try it out.

I haven't had any trouble with NWN on windows 8.1, but I did have a few issue with the toolset. I'm considering trying the upgrade to 10. I'm not exactly unhappy with 8.1, but it's very obviously meant for a touchscreen, which can feel pretty uncomfortable on the laptop. The start menu feels more like a mini-google search now, it's got so many options in it that I use the new searchbar it has at the top to find pretty much everything, even the control panel, lol.
I personally think I want to wait a while to hear about reviews on windows 10 before giving it a go.

This is why I use www.classicshell.net/ My win 8.1 looks kinda like this (picture is not from my laptop). I use this for searching: www.mythicsoft.com/agentransackAgent ransack is very quick.

Thanks for the advice, guys. Very much appreciate the input.
It's funny because just last night I finally saw the little "upgrade to windows 10" icon pop up on my laptop. Not going to do it on that poor little thing. I need to save some (okay a ton of) stuff off it first before I'd even think of trying it.
I'm not going to go for a touch screen. I have way too many devices with touch screens on them already. Gimme my good ol' mouse 'n keyboard, thank ya very much. So shying away from 8 (or 8.1 in this case) is going to be the route I go.
Wonder if I can find something new-ish that still has Windows 7, then just pop on up to 10 . . .
The search begins.

For those who are planning to stick with windows 7 or 8.1 for a while be prepared for aggressive advertising from Microsoft to upgrade. If you tire of the little windows upgrade icon in your tray you can uninstall the windows update KB3035583 which causes this. Sadly this particular update was a "recommended" update and gave very little information as to what it was, stating only "additional capabilities for Windows update notifications when new updates are available to the user." The following article divulges more... www.computerworld.com/article/2906810/microsoft-seeds-windows-7-81-pcs-with-windows-10-upgrade-nag-notices.html

even if you push the button, you're most likely just going to be put on an automatic download list when it comes out in July... I pushed the button

Just upgraded to a new computer with Windows 10, haven't played NWN since Vista stopped being supported. When trying to install the Collector's Edition from CD, everything seems fine right up until it asks me to insert the play disc to complete the installation. Once I do, it acknowledges the disc, but then does nothing with it; if I click on anything, it just goes to the autorun, which tells me to insert the first disc to begin installation, and we're back to starting the install all over again. Is Windows 10 really this stupid? I mean, the discs are just fine, and I have never had this sort of problem before. It's exasperating! I believe I have the Diamond Edition on DVD around here somewhere, but is that going to be compatible wirth all of my saved game files, if it even works? Or do I have to buy this game a third time, from GoG, just to play?

Any save files you have 'should' be compatible, though things might be weird if you last played before the 1.69 rebuild. Any character .bic files you have should also be fine, though they might have inventory or other issues related to items.

Thanks; all my save files are from since the last patch, so that shouldn't be an issue then. I will try to install my DVD Diamond Edition and see if that works.

Okay, Diamond Edition installs from DVD okay, runs in compatibility mode for XP SP3. Only thing is, the movies don't work, I just get the sound over a loading screen, then the game plays.
I went into Windows and enabled Direct Play, nothing changes.
I download and install directx_Jun2010_redist, nothing changes.
I have also heard that it might be necessary to set Safemovie to 1 in the config file, except there is no such line in my config file.
Windows 10 is a pain.
My bad, was looking at wrong config file! Have set Safemovie to 1, now they work. D'OH!

I hate Windows 10 just in general. My old pc still runs Windows 7 and it's fast and smooth. My main pc on Windows 10 is slow and sluggish even after a total wipe and reinstall. Just a bloated resource hogging piece of crap Windows 10 is.

I run it in compatibility with Windows Xp (service pak 3) admin and I turned movies off. In the nwn notepad set this: Disable Movies=1 It is there under the texture pack line: SafeMovie=0

There are two main configuration files in Neverwinter Nights. nwn.ini and nwnconfig.iniYou need to edit that line in nwn.ini. It's under the [Display Options] header, where you can also disable intro movies and set up your windowed mode options if that's what you'd like.
