"Aren't you a paladin?" The words come at Morgaine and she sighs, "No, I am no paladin, I am just a warrior that believes in the way." Morgaine thinks so hard about this, would it really hurt to be thought a paladin and as always the answer is yes.
She thinks back to her origins, Her mother was the daughter of a thief who found that she loved her city and chose to serve it faithfully holding nothing back. Her father a locksmith who believed and wanted taste of adventure. The two prowled the streets of Ravens Bluff alone and then met and cooperated and each believed and found joy as they swore to serve Torm and the city with with their skills. They became knights of the city and served well. Her mother eventually becoming one of the secretive black hawks that dealt with the worst of evil threat, seeking them out and destroying them while her father became one of the few open hawks that acted as loadstone to recruit and train the members of that secretive knighthood that kept information flowing to insure the peace of the city.
Morgaine, the middle of seven (age 11) remembered when the war against Myrkessa Jelan began and the roles of the knights and how after the war and one brutal mission to destroy one of the generals that had not been caught with the enemy commander, retired. The war brought a level of peace to the city as well as most of humanoids in the region were destroyed with the army. She was taught about faith, serve and since her parent often had missions, half raised in the temple of Torm. She saw the shining paladins and glowing priests with their great powers but she saw even more, so many people that served the faith out of devout belief and doing great things for others just because they believed. She had no special power but they inspired her. Even her parents without a single spell, only skills of training in sword, locks and stealth did amazing things for the city and set the example that anyone could do good. This was what she aspired to. When she came of age, the city of 30,000 adventurers was almost out of adventures and threats. It was settling down to a golden era and so she sought where she could bring her sword to make a difference. The troubles that beset Cormyr caught her eyes and it was only a couple weeks travel by sea from the Living city.
Trained in traps and locks to allow the holy to access the places were evil lies and by knights to fight in battle in her home city, she soon found it was a kingdom worthy of her efforts. Great deeds needed and great potential to become a place where she could call home because she earned her place. As she grew in skill, she became known to some and strongly enspoused the beliefs of Torm that she grew up with seeking to set example of what ANYONE could be and do if they chose. she was no shining warrior of light. The armor she wore was hours of work at a rented forge, the helmet the same. Each piece of gear earned with blood and sweat patrolling the roads to keep them open. Paladin, she was no paladin. Knight, she was daughter of two but not as most saw knights. I am no paladin or holy warrior, I am a person dedicated to service of Cormyr that someday my children will grow up here in a safe land set out to do as I did. Anyone can do what is right in the service of country and duty, can serve the true and become as I am. This is the goal I set, to be example of what people can be if they want to me. I am no paladin, but I aspire to being something that much more special, an example people can emulate and perhaps do even better than I do rather than admire from afar as something that no one can hope to be. She smiles as she thinks of the small gifts Torm has given her for her devotion to duty and faith, not taking them for granted but inspiration to keep on as she has been.
The next time someone refers to her as a paladin, she speaks softly, "I am most definately not a paladin and I don't want to be." She is a champion of the duties and service to The True, Torm, what anyone of good heart that hears the call of duty can aspire to.
