Alright well the truth of the matter is I didn't mean to make him from High Forest but it happened. After taking my bow and running off I thought about a different background for this character and here is what I came up with.
James parents (Thomas Holland and Mary Holland) left Neverwinter during the Riots of the Five Fires and entered High Forest. The reasons he left is unknown to James. Here they made a home for themselves out of an abandoned settlement.
James was born in the Year of the Bright Blade (1347 DR) in High Forest. He grew up with no friends. He spent most of his time with chores, being drilled by his father, at the forge, or with a treant who befriended him one time. The treant taught him honor and respect.
One day when James turned about 11 his father disappeared. His mother told him he was gone forever. James took the news very poorly. The next year he spent working with his blade and at the end of the year a man showed up claiming to own him. His mother fought but was knocked down and James in turn surrendered. He turned to James and said he was fair because he was not taking her as a slave as well.
The man turned out to be a squire of a sort in need of a page. James quickly was schooled in the arts of combat. He decided to take on the Bastard Sword because and swore to revenge on his father. After seven years of service his master was promoted and he was given his freedom with his sword and armor.
He made his way back to his mother and found that she had been slain by orcs. He couldn't tell when, but the scene remained undisturbed with an orc body laying about. It looked as if she had given birth just before she died. After giving his mother a proper burial he started his life again in the High Forest.
Now 18 he was hoping to make himself the simple life he once had. One night he heard a terrible cry in the woods and decided to investigate. It sounded like a girl screaming. He came across an aarakocra and a battered body of a female wood elf. He killed the beast and took the time to heal the woman. She was very grateful and never left his side after that day.
He married her in the company of her family. Her brother disapproved of the marriage but had no say. James was pressured by her father to gain some respect among the human nobles and given a job working for a lord just outside of High Forest. This arrangement kept him away from his home. This lead to heavy drinking.
He fathered two children a boy and a girl. They were 2 and 3 when the orcs came again. This time James had just returned home to find his wife beaten brutally and his son killed. He killed 3 of the four beasts and tortured the third until he told him where his village was. He then killed him. He took his wife and daughter and left them with the elves. He then set off on a suicide mission to kill the orcs.
Oddly enough he was successful. When his last stroke fell across the Orc Shaman slaying the last one a holy symbol of Loviatar (a nine-stranded whip with barbs at the tip of each strand) fell and landed at his feet. He took this as a grace, and became a devoted follower.
He returned to his post under his lord. A year later when he was scouting ahead on a simple cross country tour his lord was slain by orc bandits by bow. He rode back as fast as he could but was unable to catch them. His lord had fallen and he considered himself responsible. The two men that survived the encounter however told the story and he was let go from service. Now in his 20’s he leads a life as a wandering Mercenary of High Forest.
Well, thanks for reading.
