Jesh.....wake up...JESH! WAKE UP BOY! Jesh, startled from a deep sleep, lifts his head and looks bleary eyed at the Captain of the guard. "Williams....what is it?" Jesh demands rather quietly. "Jesh, clear your head and listen to me." Captain Williams replies urgently. "The Keep is under attack and your father has ordered me to get you and your sister to safety. Now get your clothes on and follow me...NOW BOY!" The last words jolt Jesh into reality and he scampers for his clothes and his dirk.
Capt. Williams grabs Jesh by the arm before he can grab his dirk. "No time, I hear them in the foyer. Through here." As Capt. Williams opens a secret door behind Jesh's wardrobe. The sounds of battle can be heard just beyond Jesh's room as the two make their way down the secret tunnel.
"UMPH!!" Jesh sounds as he sprawls on the damp stone floor of the tunnel. "By Tymora!" Jesh curses quietly. " Williams I can't see squat down here." The sound of steel clearing leather is heard and a phrase is spoken. " For Honor. " A faint blue light emits from Capt. Williams blade, just enough to see by. "MOVE!" Capt. Williams urges Jesh as he helps him up. Sounds of high pitched grunting can be heard from the tunnel entrance as well as the smell of dog sweat mixed with urine.
Jesh emerges from the trapdoor located in the stables. Capt. Williams is right behind Jesh and tosses a small stone behind him as he shuts the trapdoor. A faint boom can be heard as well as muffled howls of pain. "That will hold them for a bit." Capt. Williams chuckles, "Now to your horse young Jesh!".
They both come out of the back stall to a horrific sight. Four gnolls feasting on a dying stable boy and his father. The boy looks at Jesh as if to say please, please end this. "BILLY!" Jesh yells before Capt. Williams can stop him. The gnolls look up, giggle and grab their halberds and slowly advance on the two.
"Jesh stay behind me." instructs Capt. Williams as he readies his sword and shield. "Come on you mongrel pups!" Williams taunts, "I crap bigger turds than you!" With that the gnolls charge. "Excellent." Williams whispers as he readies his stance. The gnoll's attack is unorganized. The fastest one reaches Williams first. Williams blocks the halberd up and catches the gnoll in the gut with a textbook slash nearly splitting the dogman in two. Spinning on his heel he sets himself for the remaining three.
The other three gnolls reach Williams but mis-judged their charge which put him well inside their reach, making their halberds useless. With a series of faints and slashes Williams makes short work of the remaining gnolls. Motioning forward to Jesh, Williams checks Billy and his father. "They are dead Jesh. I'm sorry you had to see this." Jesh kneels beside his childhood friend and shuts his friend's blank staring eyes. "May the gods welcome you Billy. You and your father." Suddenly the trapdoor slams open startling Jesh and drawing a curse from Capt. Williams.
Williams quickly grabs Jesh and throws him onto a nearby horse. "Ride boy! Ride! Don't stop until you see Isinhold!" The sudden sound of crossbow bolts being fired is heard and several barbed points sprout from Capt. Williams breastplate. "Ride Jesh......Ride...." Williams whispers as he falls to his knees. His lifeblood pouring from his mortal wounds. "WILLIAMS!!!" Jesh screams. More bolts whiz past Jesh's head .
Jesh looks to see several gnolls reloading their arbalests. "HeYah!" Jesh yells as he spurs the horse forward into the stable doors. The doors burst open sending gnolls sprawling and causing a Zhentarim mage to scream startled. Jesh rides the horse towards the nearby woods, bolts flying by his head. He feels several of the bolts strike his mount and for a second he thought his horse would collapse but the steed pressed on.
Capt. Williams, the strength bled from him, kneels hopelessly staring out at Jesh's escape. "Good.... boy." He whispers, "Return with an army and retake your heritage." He coughs up some blood. "The Golden Lion will prevail." Those are the last words Capt. Williams speaks as his head is removed by an angry gnoll's blade.
Jesh awakens a few yards from his now dead mount. Several bolts sticking out of it's hide. A pounding head and several cuts and bruises let him know he is still alive. Up ahead he sees a wagon train that has stopped for repairs. Maybe they'll give him a ride to the nearest town he thinks. "I sure hope so." He mutters as he heads for the wagons.
