Kneeling before the high bishop in his gleaming armor, Tanius clutched the symbol of Helm he wore about his neck. He had his helmet off revealing his shaved head and his neatly trimmed beard. The warrior could feel the weight of his heavy armor lessen as the blessing washed over him.
Tanius stood and stretched the best he could adjusting the plate. He picked his helm up off the ground and dropped it on his head quickly adjusting a strap or two making it fit snug. His bulk dwarfed the priest before him who moved down the front line to the next warrior to offer blessings.
Tanius looked to his right and looked to his left. Shoulder to shoulder his fellow soldiers stood in gleaming white armor. There were nearly a hundred of them and they drew swords. Any foe looking in on them would most likely be stricken with awe, or fear as they realized death drew near. The warriors of helm cheered as the blessings were complete and the field commander stepped forward from the ranks. He turned and gave his usual speech to lift the men's battle spirit. They all cheered in unison at certain moments, yet through it all Tanius remained silent.
He could see the horde of orcs charging up the hill, and he knew that men and Orc would shed blood He could only hope that good prevailed this day. As the orcs neared the warriors in white the commander turned stepping back into the ranks and raised his sword. There was a loud sound of many swords unsheathing in unison. Most warriors held great two handers and a few held just a hand and a half sword.
Tanius himself was one of the few who could wield a hand and a half and shield combo. He drew his blade and picked up his shield setting his feet like a man ready to run. The commander just as the enemy was about to reach the top of the hill charged forward and his warriors surged with him. They caught the Orc horde on the slope and immediately dug in stopping them, forcing them to swing up while the warriors with the height advantage and footing on even ground, were able to drop heavy swords on the orcs heads. An occasional javelin would slip through and catch an Orc in the chest and the creature would fall thrashing only to be held up by the orcs behind him or send them tumbling down the hill.
The initial clash was a clear human advantage. Many orcs were slain due to the hill advantage but these orcs were not novices to battle. In fact they had challenged many forces before and had overwhelmed them. Tanius was surprised when an Orc to his left who was busy fighting a knight stepped aside and the Orc behind him fired a heavy crossbow into the knights chest. The knight crumpled under the weight of his own armor the force of that blow taking his strength. The Orc stepped over him and filled the gap.
It wasn't long before Tanius heard screams of both men And Orc. Still the death toll was in the humans favor and the orcs finally fled. Praises to Helm for victory were shouted among the lines as well as screams of agony by the wounded.
