Shiro Yamamato sits in his room wondering how he could be so stupid. He is one of the nine personal assassins of Lord Tama Yurikono. Lord Tama ordered him to kill the son of another lord who was quickly gaining power. However before he was able to kill the boy he slipped up. Giving up his position to the boys guards and was forced to flee.
Shiro, still wearing his gear steps out of his home carrying all his money and a change of clothes. His goal is to flee as the punishment for detection is death and the other eight assassins will be after him in a few moments. His only chance is to flee west along the trade route. Escape will come at a price though he will never see his own brother again as Masa will kill him on sight. Masa is Lord Tama's best assassin.
Having been on the run for several months Shiro is nearing the border of Kara-Tur. He has heard word that there is a city named Calimport Far to the Southwest. Hearing the stories of thievery and murder he knows this to be his new home.
Shiro spends the next several months on the road with a caravan heading to Calimport. He has hired on as a guard only asking that they allow him to travel with them. He was turned down for the job initially, but one of their guards went missing that night and Shiro was granted his place the next day.
The caravan was owned by a merchant traveling from north of the Marching Mountains. He had with him his nine year old daughter Wyn, his wife and an apprentice. The caravan was carting local bead products and goods to be sold in the open markets of Calimport. The caravan was attacked only once by a small band of bandits. One more of the guards was slain in the fight and another injured. Leaving only two guards in good health and Shiro, who single handedly slew two-thirds of the bandits.
When the caravan entered Calimshan everyone was glad the trip would be over soon. It was hot, they were running low on food, water, and the injured guard was showing signs of infection from his wound. Four more days travel would put them in Calimport.
Two days from Calimport in the evening a guard sits against a rock eating his stale bread. Something catches his eye, a movement then a quiet -thud- in the sand. He moves to investigate but it is only a diversion... as the man stands looking at the rock that was tossed he feels a sharp and violent sting in his back. The last thing he sees is Shiro's padded boots....
That night Shiro slaughtered every single member of the Caravan, save one little blond haired girl, Wyn. The next morning as Shiro eats breakfast he hears the scream he had been waiting for. Wyn was awake and had found her parents dead.
Standing there screaming. Looking down at her parents' murdered corpses she begins shaking and crying uncontrollably. She enters a state of shock and never fully recovers.
A week later Shiro and his "Daughter" enter Calimport where eventually he finds work teaching would be fighters and sell-swords the Kara-turan style of swordplay.
