I plan on making a human male barbarian to roleplay with on FRC. I would like to know more information on the different barbarian tribes, cultures, lifestyles, locations, etc. so I can create a background for my potential character. If anyone has any links to this information or if anyone can tell me this information it would be greatly appreciated by myself and future people who would like to create a human barbarian character.

the various Uthgaard tribes and Rashimien (Sp?) are where you want to look at. They are both in the FR campaign sourcebook, and rashimein are in the Unapproachable East. If that don't work, google as the good man Justicar suggested, and/or try here www.candlekeep.com

Thanks for the links Justicar and Usurper! I'm thinking I'm going to create a character who's home is the Icewind Dale and is of the tribe of the elk. I know most about that tribe from reading the Icewind Dale trilogy by Salvatore. This leads me to another question, what is the setting of FRC? I know in the official nwn campaigns there are books that tell of some of the tales that Drizzt and his companions have accomplished. If FRC is after the Icewind Dale trilogy then I can create an awesome background for my character. Also, are there any Urthgart/Barbarian tribes that are close to Cormyr? Thanks in advance.

Its really hard to compare FR books from authors and the sourcebooks for WotC. By rule, we generally only refer to material and info from the sourcebooks and offical adventures. While I am not 100% certain, I would say Drizzts adventures are happening at the same timeframe we are in at the moment. As far as Cormyr is concern we are right after Arabel has been ransacked by orcs, the king is dead, and there is a bit of anarchy in the ruling situation, although the Steel Regent if offically at the helm. There is a more detailed documentation in the Welcome Room on one of the signs of the campaign. As far as a Uthgaard tribe in Cormyr there is no official tribe within its borders, the closest tribe would be in "The North" w/ other nomaid tribes roaming in Anuaroch.

What is the name of the king that has died? If I have that I can check out some Forgotten Realms timelines and find the approximate time that FRC is taking place. I guess if this doesn't work I will have to make my characters bio very general. I don't like that becuase then I can't give him serious strengths/weaknesses/goals/etc. So "The North" and Anuaroch you say. I'll check that out.

Well I have been doing some research on the approximate setting of the Forgotten Realms Cormyr. In the Year of the Unstrung Harp (1371) a Red Dragon lead a humanoid army (mostly orcs and goblins) to battle on the cities of Cormyr. King Azoun IV and the Dragon slayed each other in combat. His son Azoun V, an infant, became king while Azoun IV's daughter, Princess Alusair, becomes the new king's regent. *Potential Spoilers to Salvatore readers below!* The time frame of the Elk Tribe as written by R. A. Salvatore. Salvatore's books in the Icewind Dale Trilogy and The Legacy of the Drow deal with Tribe of the Elk in the Icewind Dale. Starting with the book The Crystal Shard, Akar Kessel finds the crystal shard Crenshinibon and uses it to attack the villages of Ten Towns. After killing the dragon Icingdeath with Drizzt’s help, Wulfgar unites the barbarian tribes into one tribe (Elk) and helps the villages of Ten Towns to defeat Akar Kessel’s forces. These events take place from 1351 (Year of the Crown) to 1356 (Year of the Worm). Bruenor discovers Mithral Hall and calls for help in claiming it from the duergar and the black dragon Shimmergloom. His kin in Icewind Dale allong with half of the Elk tribe answer his call and together the reclaim Bruenor’s old home. The members of the Elk that came to Keepers Dale decided to stay in a nearby outpost, Settlestone, and be traders for Mithral Hall. In the book Siege of Darkness the battle of keepers dale takes place where Mithril Hall’s Dwarves and their barbarian neighbors, half of the Tribe of the Elk, as well as Nesme, Moonwood, and Silverymoon help fend of a drow invasion. During this book Wulfgar is slain and Berkthgar becomes the new leader of the Tribe of the Elk. These events take place during 1357 (Year of the Shadow). Berkthgar and his kin travel back to Icewind dale to live their lives as their ancestors did (as nomads) along with Bruenor and his friends, and a few of his clan. There is hostility between the dwarves and the barbarians, however, they never downright attack each other. In the book Passage to Dawn, peace is found within the Tribe of the Elk as well with their neighbors when Wulfgar is released from the clutches of the demon Errtu. This takes place in 1364 (Year of the Wave). Fast forwarding to 1370 (Year of the Tankard) the attack on Mithral Hall by the orc Obould Many-Arrows and the frost giantess queen Gerti Orelsdottr takes place in the books within the Hunters Blade Trilogy. These events are one year before Azoun IV’s death. Now back to my original goal… So it’s safe to say that I can make a small sect of barbarians who didn’t didn’t leave with Berkthgar to the Icewind Dale. There I can choose where this small group of barbarians wound up (Cormyr region anyone?) and create my character. Now I just got to figure out when he was born… Sources: A Grand History of the Realms - www.geonomicon.com/chronology/A%20Grand%20History%20of%20the%20Realms.pdfThe Complete Forgotten Realms Timeline - www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/castle/2566/realmstime0.htmChronology of the Forgotten Realms - www.geonomicon.com/chronology/temporum/faerun.htm (Doesn’t work with Firefox) Books by R. It seems the Uthgardt tribes aren't the same type of barbarians in Icewind dale (The tribes in the dale worship Tempus). I remember reading about the Uthgardt Sky Pony tribe in one of Salvatore's books (when Drizzt and crew were trying to find Mithral Hall) and I have a basic understanding of how they operate so I could do that. But I know best the Icewind Dale tribes. Anyone know what those tribes are called? ex: The Red Tiger and Sky Pony tribes are Uthgardt. The Elk and Bear tribes are called ____?

They are the same tribes. I belive they are the Black Ravens tribe or something like that. I can't seem to find the list of all the tribes, but they are in the Forgotten Realms campaign sourcebook. If there is one book to buy, it is that one.

Looking back after a few days break I think I can say that the elk tribe and bear tribe mentioned in Salvatore's books are part of the Uthgardt tribes. It's just weird that the barbarians of Icewind Dale favor Tempus over Uthgar. Ok, now that I have a clear picture I can start building a biography for my character. And maybe I'll post in more detail the exact time FRC takes place that way if people in the future want to make "spin off" characters from the Forgotten Realms books they can accurately.

Tempus is an ally to Uthgar, and a few of the tribes have abandoned Uthgar in favor of some of the other gods. I don't know the full history behind the switches, but one way to think of the matter is that perhaps some tribes have evolved or been corupted, and/or pefer other gods to better suit their needs. I could really be any number of things. There are many cases where gods have tricked other followers into follow them, while thinking they were giving praise to their god. Shar is one such diety who has performed these nasty little evangelical tricks, another is Jim Baker....errr wrong campaign

Uthgar shares a dislike for Ilmater, Tyr, Torm or better known as the triad for stealing away a number of his tribes to the side of "Law" and "Justice" and "Self Sacrafice" for people who arent really fellow tribe members. After all he feels the old way of settling things was a fight to near death or death over anything to women, food, drink, or whatever else they want. It in a way works out like humaniods, the biggest and strongest gets what they want unless a cheif or shamen deems it not ok. One of many reasons most Uthgardt barbarians follow Tempus as their patron is that he has in a way shown more legend to back him up as a much more powerful being. Uthgar shares GRAET distaste for Auril as well for converting a good number of the Elk tribe members out of fear for her mercy in her making the winters in the north colder and longer. The ancient left over of the once proud members of the Uthgardt Red Pony tribe and Golden eagle tribe have over centuries become Grimlocks and have mostly turned to the worship of Shar, out of her recent gaining of the portfolio of the Underdark and for her unique interest in the blind. if not Shar's worship many Grimlock turn to the worship of our favorite snake haired stone gazing women mostly as their gaze is somewhat amazing to them, they cannot see, it's out of their grasp how it works so they think them holy ;D
