Her breath comes heavily as she stares up at the all too familiar ceiling, her throat still aching from the screaming. Slowly, the child rises in the bed, running her hands over her face. She had done it again, hadn’t she? They’d be mad at her.
She can hear their hushed voices outside.
“She was speaking in tongues again!” – “The priests don’t know what to do…” – “The Helmite said she must be possessed…” – “I’m starting to think so too…”
She closes her eyes. She doesn’t want to hear that. It was not her fault, was it?
“And she’s costing us a fortune. Between Medicine and the priests and… “
Her eyes water up. It was not her…
“Woof!”
She looks up, the back of her hand wiping away a tear. There it was again.
“Woof woof!”
Carefully, the young girl climbs out of her bed and makes her way towards the window. Pushing aside the curtains, she squints at the light suddenly descending upon her.
“Woof woof!”
She glances down through the open window at the small, gold-brown dog hopping around in front of her window, barking happily. She smiles softly, trying to ignore the horrible voices coming from the next room.
“Hey there…”
Its big eyes look up at her, wagging its tail merrily. Glancing over towards her bed, she spots the rests of her lunch. Oh well. She hadn’t been very hungry anyways.
The dog on the other hand seems very hungry, quickly gulping down what scraps she throws towards it, happily wagging its tail. This was better. It was better to focus on this then listen to those horrible, hushed voices.

“Wh-Where are we going?”
Carefully she sets one foot in front of the other. She can barely see in the dark, but it seems they had left the city and entered the forest. She had never been to the forest before.
The sounds of the city have long faded behind them. The eerie quiet, only disrupted by the occasional sounds of creatures she did not know, sends shivers down her spine.
“Don’t worry kid, it’s not far anymore.”
She tightens her grip around the man’s hand, nodding meekly. Why did he bring her here? There was not even a road as far as she could tell. She stops in her tracks as her body is shaken by a fit of coughs. It's freezing. Mother could at least have given her a coat before sending her off with this person. He pulls her along, even as she trips, wheezes, never slowing even as she does her best to stumble to her feet again.
“Ech, this is far enough.”
He roughly yanks her arm forward, sending her hurtling towards a tree. She crashes into it, hard, her side protesting in pain. Fearfully her gaze rises towards the man as he pulls something out from under his cloak.
“Feeling a little bad killing one so young, but I hear in yer case it’s fer the best, eh, loony?”
Her eyes widen as he readies a bolt, leveling the crossbow at her. A gasp escapes her throat, followed by a whisper.
“A… a golden wolf.”
The man scoffs a bit, letting out a dry chuckle.
“Ye really are one crazy chick, aren’t y-“
He freezes in his tracks at the growl behind him. Slowly, the man turns to stare at the massive beast, it’s golden fur seeming to glow all by itself even in the depth of the night.
She closes her eyes. She doesn’t want to hear that horrible voice, even as it makes it last sound. She doesn’t want to be alone with him, nor with the beast. She doesn’t want to know what the warm liquid spraying her really is. Terror fills her young heart, washing away every thought as her consciousness slips away…
Her eyes open slowly. It’s bright. Where was she? Outside? Was she in that horrible forest still? No…
Something warm is next to her, warm and soft. It moves. A smile slowly covers her face as the little dog gazes up at her, wagging its tail so happily. Her gaze sweeps over the area. They were in the outskirts of the city. A field. No scary forest. No horrible men. No giant monsters.
It must have been a dream.
A horrible dream.
But the red stains on her dress tell her she cannot go back home.
She can hear their hushed voices outside.
