My Ma always said I was her little angel, she may have smirked when she said it, but I did hear it a few times.
Its not easy being the ugliest gnome in the room. People stare and I don't mean the quick glance, they stare with mouths open in horror.
Ma and Pa weren't ugly, Pa looked tidy in his business suit handling the accounts for Corbryn Import Exports. Ma got her share of appreciative looks when she went to the market.
I asked them about it when I was older "Ma, how come I was born so ugly?" She said "You were born during tough times. You were just about to be born when that fiend appeared in the town square. He cast some unholy spell just as you came out and I always thought that caused your deformities."
Deformities is almost too clinical a word for them, I have something wrong with my mouth and jaw so spittle runs down my chin constantly. My left leg is longer than my right leg which causes me to walk with a hop and a limp. Growing up was tough, I must have gotten picked on by all of the bums in town. Pa said it was good for me since it toughened me up. What did he know being as he would get out of breath just climbing up a flight of stairs.
But it did toughen me, and most that first met me usually underestimated me when they saw me hobbling around. I could hobble nearly as fast as others could run, but it did tire me out quickly.
I knew that I never would have the head for numbers like my Pa and had heard that Cormyr was a good place for someone to make a name for themselves. Maybe I could hire myself out as a guard for caravans or stand watch over some merchants shop. I'd even heard that there were old ruins full of treasures for the brave or foolhardy.
