Chowden winced as he stubbed is booted foot on yet another tree root, a nearby branch raking his face with its thorns. The curse words emanating to his left from his companion Eldrick, indicated that he too was having trouble negotiating the pathways (or lack of them) of the King's Forest.
"You said he could be found just ahead and that was an hour ago" he spat at the cowled figure to his right "Do not play tricks with us man."
They had been tracking the traiter Vennis for months and were perhaps closer to their quarry than ever before, since (after a few discreet enquiries in Marsember) this hooded man had come forward with information on someone of this name encamped out in the forest.
"Do not fear master Chowden, you and Eldrick here will find who seek, all in good time" motioning them forward once more.
After hacking their way through a few hundred more metres of vegetation the hooded figure held up his hand to stop. A clearing lay ahead, perhaps signs of habitation also. Exchanging a meaningful glance with Eldrick (having worked and spent so much time together, a mere look or simple change of tone of voice was enough to convey whole sentences of information with each other) he edged forward to the clearing, his partner waiting behind, watching for anything unexpected.
Reching the break in the trees, he scanned the clearing before him...nothing. No sign of an encampment, nothing recent anyway, and his tracker's eyes could see no trails more recent than a few weeks old. The fool of a guide would pay if he had tricked... The sound of a light thud and gargled scream interrupted his thoughts. Swinging round he caught the sight of Eldrick desperately clutching at the knife point protuding from the front of of belly, and the figure was upon him.
Desperately clutching at his scabbard he managed to get the blade half-wayout of its sheath before the man's longsword plunged deep into his stomach and up behind his ribcage.
Lying in a pool of crimson, he desperately spluttered and gasped for air, yet none would come. The world fading to black he watched the cowled man stand over him, lowering his hood.
"See I told you I would lead you to him..."
