Most of the inn's inhabitants had long since left. A female elf sat slumped in a chair. Before her were numerous empty tankards. A mournful tune floated from her and filled the room. Its depressing and haunting tone might have had something to do with the empty room. She pushed a lock of red hair out of her emerald eyes, seemingly content to kill the innkeep's profit with her dirges. Her voice was lovely and frighteningly sober considering the suggested intake of spirits.
"Love, a fool's game.
Tangled and stupidly I followed its rules.
Sweet kisses and trust earned me a first.
Til' I became lost and got left behind.
Shadows and light do not mix.
No more embracing the night.
I tried to welcome the sun.
It was no longer the same, its brilliance blinded me.
Now I stumble and barely exist between two worlds.
I hope with each breath that you suffer like I do.
Its too much to hate and love you...."
As she is about to continue, the door to the front of the inn bangs open. In steps an identical copy of the elf sitting at the table. The innkeep looks over at her with relief.
“Bout' time ye showed. She made me customers leave wit her singin'.”
The elf at the door snorts and tosses a small bag of coins at the innkeep before stepping toward the table. She pointedly speaks.
“Sis, shut up and get up. We are leaving, you have worn out our welcome. Again.”
She jerks her sister's arm and yanks her up from the chair. The two elves leave, one dragging the other out the door. This continues across the city until they stop in front of a small tower. The sober sister looks to her drunken and identical twin.
“Its time you get help. I'm tired of this and what HE did to you. You will speak to the fellow inside and he is going to help you start feeling better.”
She shakes her head at the sad sight of her sister before her.
“Stay here. I am going to make sure he is ready for you.”
The sober twin steps inside and spots the elf male in robes. She eyes him somberly.
“She's outside. You are sure this will make her forget him?”
He studies her and nods.
“As agreed, I will erase all of her memory and emotions associated with him. It will be as though she never met him. Do you have the coin?”
She hands him a small satchel.
“Its gems. They are lighter and easier to carry. How long will this take?”
He checks the bag of gems and nods thoughtfully.
“Several hours. You should return at noon tomorrow. She will be recovering until at least then. Bring her in Simbelmnye.”
Simbelmnye stepped outside to face her sister, who had collapsed on the ground and was crooning to herself. Her eyes echoed with sorrow at her sister's pain before her expression changed into a blank mask.
“Come on Sis. He's waiting on you.”
Simbelmnye led her sister inside and made introductions.
“This is my sister, Simbelmyne.” She looks toward her sister. “Sis, he is going to take good care of you. I'll come back in an hour or two when you are done talking.”
Simbelmyne looked between the two elves and shrugged.
“Sure, whatever. If you think talking to this idiot will help.” Her tone is scathing. “You would have to find a male for me to talk to. Go away Sim. I'll pretend to be good and chat with him about the hole in my chest and why every morning feels like my life is ending.” She makes a shooing motion with her hands and turns to face her “therapist.”
Simbelmnye slipped out the door as her sister turned away. Tomorrow would be different. Things would be better with that arsehole out of her sister's life. It would be like she was reborn. A new life was beginning for them. She headed back to their rented home to read the scroll she received. It was time to head back to familiar ground. To black and gold.
Inside the tower, Simbelmyne sat mutely and stared. The wizard responded by beginning to murmur an incantation. She appeared alarmed at this and jumped up to head for the door. The door never opened. A hand slid down its wooden wall, as Simbelmyne lost consciousness and crumpled to the floor.
