My latest PC is a Druid/Ranger multi-class. He started with ranger weapons because that was his first first class, and I didn't dump them right away when I look a druid level. But then I read this in the Player's Handbook, "The weapons and armor of a druid are restricted by traditional oaths, not simply training. A druid could learn to use a two-handed sword, but using it would violate the druid's oaths and suppress her druidic powers." Now I stick to druid weapons, but I do miss my bow. So, here are my questions for the community. - If you play, or have played, a multi-class druid, did you restrict your PC to druid weapons? Why or why not?
- Is there something in FR source material that supersedes what the PHB states? (Besides being a follower of Mielikki.)
- Which "druidic powers" do you think a druid would lose? Spells? Shape-change? Other?
- What is it about the allowed weapons that makes them acceptable while others are not? For instance, what makes a scimitar permissible but not a short sword?
- Should this restriction have an impact on shifters? Some of their shapes use weapons that aren't permitted. (Personally I don't think placing that restriction on shifters would be fair.)
Let me say that I am in no way intending to criticize how someone else roleplays their druid. Since I'm a relatively new druid I'm looking for constructive ideas on how I can roleplay this aspect of the class. I'm not trying to suggest how anyone else should play their character.

I asked this in a DM Q&A once. The team's ruling was that druids can indeed use other weapons if they have the proficiency without violating their oaths. #2: I've already talked to a few people about this privately, but, I had been given conflicting answers, so I'll post again here... if a druid gains proficiency with weapons beyond druidic proficiency (such as simple, martial, exotic, etc), can they use said weapons without violating their oaths? The section in the SRD on druidic weapon and armor proficiencies reads as follows: I don't see any specific mention of being forbidden to use weapons they gain proficiencies with in the same way as they're forbidden to use metal armor or shields, although I just thought to post here asking to be certain because I had been told otherwise elsewhere. Thanks again for your time. Druids only suffer a penalty for wearing metal armor, not for using weapons that do not appear on the druid weapons list. If a druid is proficient with other weapons, the druid may use them. Of course, if someone prefers to limit their druid to "traditional" druid weapons, they're free to do so! My impression, though, is that this tradition is taken just to mean that these are the weapons druids are typically trained in, not that they consider others sacrilegious or anything of the sort.
