Devin Riordan
- The Past-

Devin Riordan was born somewhere in the great sea of sand known as Anauroch. His mother and father were both members of the nomadic tribe and the family of Riordan- one of the Hundreds or Bedine tribes. As a child, his tribe and family moved constantly, never in the same area for more than a few days at a time. Traveling minstrels and merchants, they made a living in gathering information and selling and trading both knowledge and goods between other nomadic groups and those that pass though on trade routes.

At the age of 13, Devin was separated from his family by a great and powerful sand storm. After a few days of searching for his clan, living off of fruits and wild desert creatures, Devin found a ruined caravan with his parents’ bodies torn and shredded by the harsh sand. The lack of nutrition finally took hold and was too much to bear.

Devin awoke some time later- being nursed back to health by an Elven priestess. She and her companions found him among the rubble. In return for their aid, he became their guide, and showed them the routes to many Oases along their way to their destination and helped them avoid the D'tarig.

Time moved on, He had traveled in the company of those that had saved him for two years. The group reached Waterdeep and decided to settle. Devine was not happy with staying in the same area for the rest of his days, at least not at that stage of his life. He decided to move on. He found a Ship that was setting sail and hiring crew members. Devine jumped on bored and signed up.

The ship was called The Unicorn and the crew was very pleasant and easy to get along with. During the ships days at sea, they took many jobs and helped stop many pirates - surveying the seas and guarding many ports, offering trade and transport to those with the coin to pay.

Three years at sea, off and on, The Crew of the Unicorn was forced to abandon ship and split ways. The ship stopped at many ports along the Sword Coast before being completely dismounted and sold in Amn. Devin was one of the last crew to leave the ship, The ship made him feel at peace. He felt a strong sense of freedom as they traveled the open seas, yet hard shelter every night.- the best of the two worlds he saw in people. On the ship he had a home, a permanent place to rest and friendly and delightful people to enjoy the time with, yet the movement and the sights changing at every moment kept him from growing bored.

During his travels he developed his skills as a merchant and musician, yet let lack his studies of lore. He learned of a academy in Cormyr ran by a bard. He decided to visit this academy and begin to improve upon his knowledge of the world and those beyond.

Devin Riordan
-Personality & Description-

Standing at six feet and four inches, Devin weighs between 200 -210 pounds. His long dark hair and shortly trimmed beard are well kept and groomed. His emerald green eyes betray his pure blooded Bedine heritage, but marks him also as special among his clan. His skin is bronzed and tanned, even though he has been away from the desert for many, nearly 5 or 6 years. He is young, barely 20 if you had to guess. His skin is smooth and unblemished, he carries a rapier at his side and a blue and white case, housing a yarting, across his back, underneath a large tower shield -when he isn't using it. His hat lays lazily on his head, and when he is writing his music or other works of art, he is often seen using the feather as a quill.

Devin is known to keep his word to all those that he trusts and to his allies, he has a high regard for life and for freedom. He is not above lying or cheating if it is necessary in order to see that he and/or his allies are safe, or if the victims of his words or actions are not deserving of the right to honesty – though this is rare.

Devin is all for a fair fight, and will not likely kill an unarmed foe, but is willing to attack or subdue one if necessary. He understands that the lack of a physical weapon does not make a foe any less dangerous, the use of magic and the martial art styles of those who belong to monastic orders are always treated as armed – if he knows or even suspects it.

Devin is not the type to harm an innocent person, and he dislikes torture of any kind, but understands that in dire circumstance, the act of torture may be the only way to extract information- but only as a last resort and never does he take pleasure in bringing others undue pain. Devin does not kill for shear pleasure, and even in self defense he occasionally feels remorse for those he has slain – if not at the time, then later when he reflects upon the days events.

Devin is eager to use his skills to aid those in need. He enjoys the expression of gratitude many show after being helped. Through monetary or other material incentive is not his only goal, he always accepts such when offered to him. He works with others, especially when it is beneficial to his personal goals, but dislikes authority and bureaucracy.

To that extend, Devin attempts to work within the local laws of the land he inhabits whenever possible, but tends to break and bend the law when deemed necessary. Loyal to the death to those that have earned the title of “Friend”, Devin will never betray this trust, and will go out of his way to ensure such high ranking people in his life are safe and happy.

In essence, Devin is a good soul, and has a noble heart. His ambition however seems to taint or even causes him to act in manners some would deem bad or even evil as his knowledge and respect for freedom knows no bounds. He will ally himself with those known to be evil so long as he can personally find trust in them, and thus this act separates him from the energies of pure good or pure evil. Those terms mean little to Devin, as he does not adhere to what many people suggest are in those concepts. His distaste and distrust of authority and his free spirit nature breaks any and all ties to the energy and essence of Law.

1. What does your character fear?

Very little. The unknown is but a challenge. He does fear that his curiosity will harm those he cares about and loves. He can’t shake the feeling, however, that there is something dark inside of himself. A presence that is unseen. In times of anger he and pain – this darkness bleeds forth. During these times he feels no remorse for action he performs. The utter lack of regard scares him. And he can feel such remorse slipping away.

2. What does your character love?

Music, the Arts, Food, Fine Drinks, Beautiful People of all races and genders, and he really enjoys watching people have fun. He loves to entertain and be entertained. To be appreciated by and to be among those he considers friends.

3. What does your character hate?

Devin hates ugliness and filth, not just in appearance but attitude and life style. Awful or spoiled food and cheaply made beverages are also a minor pet peeve of his. Above all else, Devin Dislikes authority and being forced to comply by certain standards. Law is abhorrent, Freedom is Just.

4. What currently, motivates your character?

He is motivated by his whim. He rarely makes plans and when he does, he takes his time to accomplish it – either by the lack of dedication or motivation. His free spirit “Devil may care” attitude often drives him to search for excitement and inspiration. Although besides inspiration, Loyalty to those he has deemed the rank of “Friend” will drive him to put a halt on any current personal goal.

5. Do you consider your character to be pious?

Devin knows and understand the works of many religious Deities. He will often pray to those that he needs the blessings of at the time. During his sailing days he often tithed and prayed to Umberlee. However, Devin seems to be drawn more to Ohgma than any other, and if he had to choose a single deity it would Ohgma. His free spirit, however, being the case – Devin does not worship on any set schedule and will often be seen even praying to deities such as Malar (when about to hunt) or Kossuth (when in need of a warm fire). He is at heart Polytheistic.

6. What does your character consider the meaning of life?

The meaning of life is to have fun and to learn all you can while doing so. Knowledge is the only thing that a person can take with them when they pass on. Either by study or by exploration, either by sharing such knowledge through story or song. Knowledge is the meaning of life, it is life. Without the power that knowledge bestows upon the world – life would be still primal. Nothing would learn. It would all be the same. Never changing – Boring.

7. Does your character have any quirks that set them apart from the crowd?

Often makes light of bad situations, or makes jokes at the wrong place or time. His intend is to soften or lighten the mood, but such acts may be deemed disrespectful during times of reverence.

8. What are your character's flaws?

He has an addictive personality. Drinks, gambles, smokes on occasion various herbs and roots. His search for money and fame may drive him to put those he loves in danger – but not by intent- just an unforeseen consequence.

9. What are your character's strengths?

His music and his loyalty. His ability to enjoy life as it is. His search for knowledge. His friends. Roxanne.

10. Why does your character stay in Cormyr?

He came to Cormyr to learn under the tutelage of Alyster, The Bard, Darkharp at the Alzharian Academy of Bardic and Arcane Lore. While waiting to be accepted into said Academy, he met Roxanne. He considers her his muse for life. He is very interested in learning and knowing this work of art. He has grown attached to her in a way that he can not describe. He uses the word love, but it is because that is what the songs and stories describe the feeling to be. She has admitted to feeling the same way about him, and the few times that his allies have told him that he had died, all he could remember was her voice and her face drawing him back to his body. His life’s work is in Cormyr. And, at least for the foreseeable future, He will remain.

Recently Devin could be seen in the Regal Griffin Inn tossing his feathered hat into the fire place. ripping pages from several books that he had been writing in during the last month and tossing the pages and the book covers all into the fireplace as well. Upon leaving the Inn, he order a case of Dwarven Triple Bock and walks out with these case in arm.

Devin now wears a Hood. the hood is made of a tight network of adamantium chain links. His usual cloak of the Unicorn Mercenaries is no longer worn.
