Maiff sighed at the border crossing and filled in the forms as requested
Name: Maiff Acreal
Birth Location:Rockhalls, Misty top spine mountains.
Race: Dwarven
Age:50
Status:Refugee
As the staff checked and approved her application .She thought back on her past.
Maiff was born to Angrist and Lodmar Azcreal, a welcome only child they had tried long and hard to produce this precious offspring.
She was born with a golden hammer in her hand (humans may use the term born with a silver spoon in their mouths)Her father Lodmar was a stone artisan he over saw the mining endeavors and the safety and structure and security of the halls. Angrist her mother was a hearth keeper, Mother to the clan and a healer.
Maiff was born under an auspicious star , a full mop of blond curls and twinkling blue/Grey eyes.
Years passed quickly and she learned and went to school. She was different to the other children when they drew pictures of mushrooms and rock formations Maiff drew trees and flowers.
Her father loved his daughter but was concerned at her undwarven ways and decided to send her visiting to a nearby clan through the vast tunnels.Maiff loved the caves but she yearned for something beyond the caves, to see the sky written about in books to see an ocean and a bank of wild flowers.
At the Wirlrish clan she encountered an Elf dressed in clothes of green and small pointed ears, Iinari'klam spent hours talking to the child in between his official business of commissioning a statue carved by the clan. He spoke of hills told tales of forests stretching beyond sight, of creatures great and small.
On her third month of being at the clan a terrible cry rent the air, as a side wall caved in and Duergar filled the mighty caverns with the sound of death and dieing, hacking and slashing left and right they slaughtered all they encountered.
Maiff stood in her nightgown to terrified to run or hide or defend herself as the Duergar axe crashed towards her , she heard a strange whizzing sound as an arrow buried itself deep in the duergers head and he fell forward dead.Iinari'klam grabbed the bewildered child and rushed to the tunnels looking back grimly he saw the few who were alive huddled in a group. As a fire surrounded and engulfed them he hid the child's view but not her ears so she heard the cries as they burned alive.
Iinari'klam quickly navigated through the twisted and turning tunnels the child in his arms, he started to take her to the Rockhalls, but Maiff suddenly began to cry as the very walls seemed to mourn the loss of all its caretakers.
The familiar passage to the Rockhalls had been crudely collapsed, sticking out a battered dead hand, a simple ring of entwined hearts and axe and shield glinted , he stopped and placed Maiff on the ground recognizing the ring as the one worn by her father. He wiped her tears and retrieved the ring placing it safely in a pouch to give to her when she was older.
Maiff never spoke of that night though often he would find her merely staring with her hand on a rock or stone face.
One night he was awoken Maiff was awake but not, and she was speaking softly.
Her hand on a stone monolith carved many moons before by the Rockhalls. "The halls are gone the stones and caverns weep, there is no longer dwarves with us to nurture and to keep, the earth is dead the old ways gone.Umber hulks now tread the ways and Duergar pass on many days they trade in death and vile ways,Run sweet child our beloved jewel seek out a life less harsh and cruel. Be gentle kind as as your mother was and learn the stone speech as your father would, learn from your guardian and walk his steps the rock halls fell they are no more but yet Maiff the Golden jewel still lives'
Many spoke of the strange sight of an older elven ranger and his shadow a dwarven child following in his guiding steps.Maiff grew and learned the way of the Forests and plants of the creatures and their ways.
One day Iinari'klam simple pushed her fathers ring into her hand and gentle brushed hair from her face."It is time for me to go child, to the land where all of my kind must go when they are called, I cannot take you with me physically but i can take the memory of you in my mind and the love I have for you in my heart' with that he turned and strode off to the forest.
Maiff strangely found comfort in his parting words and continued to travel and learn of the forests and the caves. In a village a man was passing out small fliers with a call for all those seeking a new home to venture to Cormyr to aid in what ever way they could she hefted her bow and walked slowly to the border, after all what did she have to lose.
