I've had a lot of tells asking how I maintain Vorel's bizarre dialogue. Most of the time I'm honestly not that sure myself, but in tribute to everyone that's taken an interest in her odd speech, and out of my own need for a record for some of her more eclectic terms, I present : The Vorelian Lexicon.
Vorel largely relies on descriptions. To effectively use the Vorelian lexicon one must become dedicated to avoiding directly naming concepts, people, or things as much as is humanly possible while still maintaining some semblance of coherence. The idea came from the perception that names can be dangerous if placed in the wrong hands which I then bent to extremes to result in this bizarre manner of speech.
Core ConceptsThe mystery : This refers directly to Mystra, the weave and the ability to cast spells. Sorcerers and Bards are considered
'of the mystery' as they cast innately, whereas Wizards are
'of the page' as they have learned to access the weave through study. Clerics, Druids and Rangers have
'the words of they that are more than we' and thus are not considered to 'have' the mystery themselves.
The words : Magic or more specifically spells. This may reference spell abilities tied to items, scrolls and the like. The creation of charge per use items and scrolls is referred to as
'trapping the words'.
The darkness : Essentially referencing evil, beings, people or acts that have intent to do harm to others/things or the general flow of 'peaceful' every day life. This may also be used to reference jealousy and hatred. Often spoken as '
they that have the darkness' when referencing intelligent forces that behave as such.
The duty : The acts of being prepared and watching for hostile events to provide defense as well as seeking out and routing out things that pose threats to common folk. Active participation in attempts to destroy evil beings or forces.
"With the mystery I make the words to do the duty and fight the darkness" Spell referencesMorebetter : Improvement through transmutation, the use of empowering metamagic -or- simply being a better option or having improved.
Morelonger : The use of extending metamagic.
Mostbest : The use of maximizing metamagic.
Morefaster : Haste.
The dur de durrrr : Confusion.
Breaking of the words : This refers to various effects that disrupt or prevent spell use.
'They that break the words with their skin' for example references beings with innate spell resistance. Offensive 'breaking of the words' would include spell breaches and dispelling. Defensive abilities to 'break the words' would include things such as spell mantles, shield, death wards, essentially anything that will cause different spells to fail.
