See that's just my point. You can't just chase off an animal determined to attack you. If you're going to RP that the animal was even there HOW can you simply OOC Kill it and say you chased it off? If you're not a ranger or a druid and an animal suddenly decides you need to die or be driven off back the way you came....
How can you chase off the animal? How can your PC say that he didn't kill the animal? Unless you cripple it or give it a concussion, you usually can't change an animal's mind.

Some can correct me if I'm wrong, BUt.....
Predators normally do NOT attck Humans..especially if the humans are in groups. In fact, Bears are known to run away if they know humans approach. they normally only attack when startled.
Wolves are more likely than bears to attack because they run in Packs. However, again, when given a choice between attacking an Armed Human or running away, they tend to to run away.
Historically speaking, Wolves are KNOWN to attack when they're starving. I recall a study that measured the affects of Overhunting of Deer. One of the Offshoots was the wolves were venturing close and closer to houses to seek their food.
Consider Wolves as starving because they outnumber the number of Prey animals. So it would NOT be OOC to kill wolves attacking you.
For Bears....it's a simple kill or be killed situation and not an OOC moment because Druids and Rangers are supposed to insure BALANCE nature. They may PREFER not to kill such, but it's inevitable it will happen.
If you use one as a temporary Ally..I tend to RP "putting it out of it's misery." For we as Rangers and druids don't usually support the concept of Torturing animals.

I think all this discussion about something as simple as a players preference to OOC kill animals when they are a druid or ranger (or for whatever reason) is a bit much.
Is it really even worth talking about at this length? Some people like to just kill them, others for whatever reason prefer to OOC kill them. I think that about sums it up. There are things that merit discussion and debate, IMHO, this is not one of them.

From what i can tell... the issue is about "OOC killing". Not just about doing it to animals.
I for one seriously despise "OOC Kill". Its just... meh. I really hate to see it and it drives me nuts. I have to give Glandash my support on this one.

I'll expand on my previous post then.
If you a play a druid, ranger/nature lover who doesn't want to see normal animals die, and you are with someone who defends themselves from an animal attack, and the two of you have a difference of opinion about ooc kills...man..just...get over it? I mean, examine the situation: An animal hell-bent on taking the life of the guy who is with you/near you ran out and attacked him. He killed it rather than endure death or maiming. It is what it is people. If your character is the type who would prefer to see someone killed/maimed by an animal rather than see them defend themselves...well..heck, jump in on the side of the animal!
Either way, the small amount of exp you get from these 'ooc' or IC kills is probably not worth fighting over any more than the fact that you have rescued the same guy or gotten the same quest item dozens of times and received exp for it. It's just one of those things that maybe shouldn't be dwelt upon so much.

Tonight I had my paladin threatened by another character, in the middle of a DM plot with a large amount of undead. The offense was that I had not typed // ooc before I killed one of the wolves that we spawned in the Hullack. What the intent of this thread is, is to ask the community: Does this make sense? Does typing // ooc make doing anything alright, even if it has potential consequences for your character (hp damage, gained experience, usage of spells, etc.)? What are the consequences of performing a regular 'out of character' action that affects the server, your character's stats, and your character's XP/GP flow? Let me begin by giving my opinion: I do not believe that killing any monster, whether it be a wolf, an orc, a dragon, anything, should be considered out of character. Ever. If you play a druid, play them as feral animals. If you play an elf, play them as diseased and a threat to the Hullack. Justify it -somehow- in character, because we are not supposed to speak out of character in excess, so what is the justification for advancing our characters in an out of character manner? there are many IC options when you come upon a target you do not wish to kill its the ease of just jumping in and calling it an OOC kill without first attempting an IC solution thus stealing away a chance of IC RP in response to the solution I wondered when the paladin killed the wolf was it an IC debate that arose between himself and a ranger/druid of why he killed the wolf? as this would be appropriate for an event of such or was the player immediately asked "why didn't you OOC kill"? just because that animal was not involved in the DM plot does not mean you can kill it OOC. because IC you are still standing in a dangerous place where creatures can attack and you must defend in whatever manner you choose IC when you come upon a hostile target they intend to kill you IC and it needs to be handled IC to the best of your abilities every time your characters makes an action and you emote that it is OOC you break immersion for others I think that is the big issue with OOC kills

Sloth's hit it right. There are more IC reasons to respond by killing a creature than we can shake a stick at. Even if we're generally opposed to killing such. Even pet lovers have had to put a beloved pet down. Doesn't make it any less painful for the necessity of it, but it is a fact of life.

Well... mind, at the same time as it might be immersion breaking to declare "OOC kill," it's similarly immersion breaking to need to -yet again- kill the same rabid pack of wolves who've had so little prey that they've been forced to come too close to the road and for the problem to never actually get better.
It's really just a matter of taste, I think... like HH said, it's probably best just to do what you personally prefer. Resort to OOC killing, or personally wipe out hundreds or even thousands of animals over the course of a few months and take it all ICly? I usually opt for something of a more middle ground, and just kill them ICly, but treat each respawn as an isolated incident, not as "the wolves are -always- attacking me every time I got past this point."
