I took the wand crafting feat with Gorstag recently, my priest of the Red Knight
This was a great feat to take for this priest due to the demand for priestly wands and Gorstag's persistance on encouraging others to be prepared so that their plans can come to full fruition. Its also ignited a good deal of RP. Networking with folk has increased too - there are random people that have gone up to Gorstag he doesnt know and have said, "Hey arent you that wandmaker?" Its assumed they hear of Gorstag through other folk
As some random statistics, I've lost a total of 13,560 XP from wand making. Brewers and other wand makers can sympathize I'm sure ;D I dont really view it as too much of a sting though because I play often on FRC so making up the XP (while slow), isn't hard...Not to mention the amount of damn shinies is enough to make a bald man happy
I encourage others to take the feat, if for anything to be prepared as heavens knows when your party member dies and you're out of deathward spells...You may have a handy-dandy wand ;D

I agree, something that My character has done for a long time, and it has been quite rewarding RP wise, it is quite detrimental XP wise, but I really don't care. the only thing I've been concerned about since day one was changing the magic status of FRC. When I first arrived there wasn't really anyone who bothered with wand crafting, then the DM's (thank you) turned wands into 50 uses. but still it wasn't really worth it, untill they introduced recharging at first it was from a nifty electrifyer, which was eventually removed, I say the sad face because I was one of a rare few who used this neat little guy and I quite enjoyed it, the new system is MUCH more efficent, while with the other one, you can to destroy countless items to get enough charges to place into an item. and it had to be in the same reset. but I really think that we now have wands and brewers up the ying yang and many people are taking either UMD, or a wizard/bard/sorcerer level to use such things. which has turned FRC into a more soloable place, because some characters have hordes of wands they use to buff themselves to forgo Other characters. Like a certain stoneskin harp, and some having multiple of those. Now the DM team has countered this or I assume so, by making certain gemstones more rare.. I know I feel like I see them less. But I just wonder the effect it's had on the server as a whole.

I have no idea if people are soloing a lot anymore because I don't DM on FRC so i can't rightfully say From what i have heard from players - most dislike to travel on their own due to the high risk factors of being pwnt by 20's. experience has taught me that people who do solo a lot on their own end up getting bored and leaving But when it comes to questioning the server on a whole Entori, I'd really not concern yourself with it and just enjoy the game for what it provides and who you RP with Diamonds and beljurils do seem to have become a bit more rare, increasing the value of wands IMO, or at least the use of the wandmaker! I've contemplated taking scribe scroll but I'm not sure if I'd like that too much ... There's only about maybe 3 to 4 spells I'd deem worthy of scribbing

Diamonds and beljurils do seem to have become a bit more rare, increasing the value of wands IMO, or at least the use of the wandmaker! Um ... not sure I'm following here. Been thinking about maybe selling crafted wands, but with crafting costs for ... say ... protection vs. evil of about 2000 gp and availability cheap potions, I don't see how that's going to work (esp. not covering up for the XP loss). Now, if recharging wands was EASIER rather than harder, then it might be interesting to carry the wands in the long run. The way things are (unless I'm missing something) it seems crafting of wands is (RP reasons aside) really only useful for higher level spells which you rarely find otherwise and crafted at a high caster level (because those you want rechargable) ... and only for people who can use wands in the first place, which further shrinks the market. So, while I took the feat out of habit, to date I have only used it in typical src fashion before unlearning a spell. M.

My dwarf Oskar Stonehammer makes clerical wands and scribes clerical scrolls. He's made deathward, negative energy protection, protection from evil, lesser restoration, barkskin, and even restoration wands. He's easily burnt enough xp for him to have gained a level making them, probably even two levels, since he's only 9th level, but that's not really a big deal to me or to him. I don't have him advertise, because he's xenophobic and doesn't like "tallins", but he will succumb to the temptation for the shiny gold lions if you track him down for either a wand or scroll. This is a good way to meet characters on the server, especially higher level characters that have the gold to spend on pricey items like wands and raise, resurrection, or GMW scrolls. And it's fun ;D

I miss crafting wands. I never cared about the XP cost.

wand crafting is fun and useful... I loved it for having extra spells of whatever. Only problem is the cost, since some of us obviously have no clue how to make money.
