Belir started adventuring because he believes that all evil should be destroyed, and he is the only one strong enough to accept the responsibility of completing this task. To do so, he has to gain more wealth and power, even if it means adventuring with others who are obviously evil, and whom he intends to destroy in the future. He also needs money for the ungodly amounts of ale and food that he imbibes.

That really comes down to what character you are talking to.
If you asked Render Blueskin he would say "To Become a better Paladin for Tyr"
If you asked Jack Nicknimmble he would say " *Runs away yelling* "
