"Nather! Come on in... supper's on!" The aging but attractive women yelled from up the hill where a rather large house sat amidst trees and large wheat fields.
Dropping the plow, that well built you man turned up the hill leaving his work until another day. Glancing behind him towards some unnamed wood Nather imagined the small yet bustling town Isinhold. He and his family went there and sometimes Redmist and Proskur when it was harvest time, but that was far off and the excitement he could hope for these days was a little hunt with his pa or perhaps chasing the young lass living across the hill with her family... also farmers. Life was simple for him, but a part of him did long for more.
After dinner Nather took a walk alone in the moonlight towards his and Larissa's secret meeting spot. Neither of their families worried and both hoped for the best between them. Nearing the spot Nather brightened some... Larissa was an intelligent and fun woman a small bit younger then himself, and the only one that new of his strange magical gift. He had never been able to explain it but he could sense the weave and guide it... manipulate its energies into various things... so far he had been able to make a glowing light as well as a focused charge of electricity.
"Hi Nather" her sweet voice carried from the darkness.
Smiling, Nather made a few gestures, pressing the weave into form and magical words came to his lips bringing a soft glow to the area about them. "Hello Larissa, how do you fare?"
"Tired my dear. Preparing the fields is harder work then my brothers let on, and wich Richard sick, they need my help more" Larissa replied.
"Yes, I know what you mean...." Nather trailed off. "Shhh, hear that?"
They both hunched low and the light vanished as they listened. The sounds were coming from the direction of the woods Nather looked at with such longing. The sounds of foot steps and the jingle of metal on metal faintly found their ears. Nather looked at Larissa with a worried look...
"Stay here" he whispered harshly.
With a nod he moved quickly towards his home, but it was too late. He saw the flame licking the side of their barn almost right away. Fear and concern overwhelmed him and he stood running in a dead run towards his home. He has a dagger at his belt, but not much else.
The hoots and laughter ahead of him became drowned in the roar of the building fire and Nather could make out small humanoid forms looting his home and laughing and dancing around the flames. He had never seen their like but assumed they were kobolds or goblins... something of their like. Glancing about the main house he saw new fires being set around the building, they were going to burn his family alive.
One of the fires hadnt spread much and the creature setting it was still at work with its torch. Spreading his hands with focused determination strange words sprang from his mouth and a small glowing missile formed streaking towards the little creature. Unnoticed from its fellows the creature fell with a burning hole in its chest.
Nather continued up to the house, sneaking along the side with few kobolds nearby and non that had noticed him. Climbing through a window, Nather coughed as smoke billowed by him. The hoots were growing louder and there was no sign of his family. A faint scream went unheard as the roar of the flame and the hoots of the gleeful kobolds grew.
Rushing up the stairs where the smoke grew thicker, Nather got low and crawled towards his parents room. Opening the door he saw them... crowded together, passed out on the ground unmoving. Smoke billowed through the room. Shaking his mother Nather tried to wake her, yelling over the mounting roar. She didnt move and Nather found himself feeling weaker and weaker.
With the last of his strength, Nather tried to lift his mother out the window and let her drop to the dirt below. The effort lost him his strength and dizziness overcame poor Nather. Both he and his mother fell out the window. The roar of the burning home drowned out the crash as first Nather's mother then he fell to the ground.
------
A groan of pain woke him and Nather looked around the unfamiliar room.
"Lay still, Your ok... you were found by some kind stranger and left here. Looks like you were in a fire, but made it ok, no bad burns." A kind looking healer spoke softly. "Just rest and I'll have Kale bring some of Sams broth for you strength."
