Usually such artifcacts are a sign that either your Graphics card is overclocked too much, or not cooled properly.. (Usually it's a combination, of both)

Okay, thanks. I run things pretty minimally, so I don't think it's an overclocking thing. A system restart removed the effect, but it's still got me curious. Probably cooling, then.

I'm serious your card could be just failing..
it would help to know your system.. if you changed your card recently..
and when the last time you blew the sucker out with compressed air

I just added new parts in early August. Haven't blown everything out since then.
Asus M3A78-EM motherboard, EVGA GeForce GTS 250 video card. Can't remember my processor, but there's a Chiquita Bananas sticker on the case.

pretty heavy duty card..
I only got a mid tower and i was told that if I get anything bigger then my 9700 to get a bigger tower with at least 3 fans
give it a good blow out and hope you've not melted anything ...
where it is static though, It may be static just building up from the dust.. blowing it out may help greatly!

Could well be it's the cooling on the card, that is not working properly... might want to see if it's working.. I had the same problems with a previous videocard, i had it's stock cooler replaced with a big hunking piece of metal, but installed it wrongly.. causing the same artifactcs, because the GPU was overheating..

Yeah. It is plugged in upside down with the fan pointed down about an inch above the bottom of my archaic emachines case. I got a new case for everything, but I couldn't plug the power cord into the card due the the power supply taking up the space needed. Thus I gutted out and used my old case. I might show a pic sometime. It is quite humorous as it advertises the awesomeness of 512 meg of RAM.

Descent into Araulurrin. This should be the cover of a fantasy novel. Gee, that's helpful! As far as I could tell, this placeable did nothing when used. Almost. Sarcastic comments aside, these were pretty neat areas, and it was fun to explore new stuff.
