This is coming from a DM question which I didn't want to pollute with my scummy player comments, since only DMs should be posting answers and comments there.
A player was asking about getting a DM to play an archrival of his, and the DM response was that they would be better served getting a PC rival, since they wouldn't have to wait for a DM to be online to interact with them.
I was just wondering about other people's thoughts on this. I have a monk character who happened to see a paladin with the same last name (Swift). I immediately siezed on this and thought how cool would it be for them to be relatives, especially since my monk is not so nice a guy. He already killed one PC (and nobody even knew it, not even the guy he killed. Hows that for a good assassin!) I figured pairing him up with a paladin and cultivating a healthy hatred between them along with the added complication that they are blood relatives would make for an interesting time.
The other player agreed and we worked it out in tells that they are cousins, and that he's heard "stories" about my character.
In other cases, I haven't done this. My elf's recent fight with Kah (who probably doesn't even remember it) and an upcoming fight with some super crazy looking human (Coryc Throat) weren't worked out beforehand.
So, what do people think about contacting someone OOC and working out the details of your cordial hatred? If you are looking for a long term rival as part of your backstory, is it ok to work this out with another player OOC?

I actually did this on another server now debunked. It was quite by accident that we had the same last name for our characters. We worked it out ooc since their character was the "evil' one and mine was "good" and neither of us wanted to remake our characters.
The rivaley went on for two years and made for some absolutely fantastic rp. Interesting enough, there was very little PKing with it and some interesting events occured when the dms decided to pick up on the rivalery and help with it.
So, I, at least, think it's perfectly alright to do.

I think it is fine so long as both players understand what each knows and doesn't metagame beyond that.
I will say that I forsee a slight drawback to this. If the other PC hears "too much" about the rival, it may turn to PvP fights rather quickly. This isn't necessarily bad, but sometimes it deteriorates into constant battles with one another. If you are both cool with that, that is fine. But it may lose some of it's flair quickly.
I prefer to leave the other player guessing if I am actually their enemy or not. I know there are at least 3 players that are probably on their toes when I am around them because they don't know if I am going to gut them or help them. I have had two arch rivals, both are gone now, but most of the time RPing with them ended in swords (or began with swords).
Just my thoughts

While planning this out OOC is probably ok, in the end, its like reading the last chapter of a book. I personally would have OOC set up the "cousins" part, and left it at that. Let things progress naturally. All my favorite times on FRC have involved rivalries and cloak and dagger. But the best part about them was not knowing for certain who my enemies were, much like Quad said. For me, OOC info has always been the biggest kill-joy for RP. I think the less you know as a player, the more fun you will have as your character begins to figure things out all on his own.
One thing about character rivalries. Nothing screws them up more than OOC info. Because if you know OOC stuff, then it becomes a question of wether you uncovered your rivals evil plot through RP or metagaming.... and inevitably, there will always be place in the back of the other players mind which thinks you cheated. So, do what I do, dont ask for, or give ANY OOC info that is relevant to anything in game.

Well, I guess I should clarify that what we worked out ooc was how they were related and why they hated each other and what they would both know about each other. The rest was purely IC encounters and IG knowledge.

What I like is the "natural flow and creation" of archrivals... Just through PC to PC interactions no less. Just remember the saying though.... Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

With my main guy i have a few rivals and some are in good nature like my competition with that scurvy dog Kam and of course me and Ranan get together quite often for hot cocoa and marshmallows every chance we get. Sometimes it is fun to just create rivals, maybe have a low level guy suddenly gunning for an established PC for some good rep. I would go after manshin if anyone thinks that would be fun. he is fun to try and kill. i have pvped very few times and yet, have gone after alot of other peoples PCs with out anyone knowing. Spread rumors, make people wonder, live it up. and as a player once said to me in ooc, hey, i do not want to know this...let me find this out ig so i don't accidentally use this. i know people have told me ooc and it is hard not to use the stuff. i know i tell people ig something i know is false just cause someone told me ooc. Rivals are fun. I have a fun rival, a true rival, and one rival who does not even know they are a rival...though they will.*Mr Burns impression* excellent....
its a game, have fun, play hard

I would have to agree....thats the best way. Chril and Padrin used to be best friends but now.......oooooh the hatred! Its the main reason why rp'ing is so fun, you never really know what will happen. Just go with the flow of things.

Pretty much agree with what's been said so far.
From my experience it usually seems when you plan things out OOCly it tends to be rather short lived. I mean, when you know how the script is going to go then it sort of gets boring.
I especially have a pet peeve with people that create a character specifically for the reason of getting romantically involved with another character. Where's the fun in that? :/
Now, maybe having some past connection with a character (i.e. relative or past friend) is fine as it makes for a richer character history. But the key word here is "history". Let it be in the past and whatever comes in the future should remain wide and flexible.

I've only done the romantic thing once, and even then, I'm not expecting anything more than really good friends. Unless, of course, something DOES happen between them....
