A group of us had a discussion the other day. I have an elf who was fighter 4/rogue 5. I went to level. I wanted to level more in rogue. We discussed some 20% xp penalty if my levels were not balanced out, because I am an elf. What is this, and when does it apply? Thanks for the help

this is something that is hard wired into the game. as an elf, your favored class is Wizard. if one of your classes was wizard, then your second class could be anything and you would not take an xp penalty no matter what the level range was. the way it works is this you can be for example rogue3 /fighter2 and no penalty because they are only one level apart. but as soon as you add a rogue level and get to rogue4/fighter2 you will take a 20% penalty on all xp. that includes DM granted xp, quest xp, and monster killing xp. if you take a 3rd class that isnt a favored class the penalty will increase to 40%. my character Vind has been taking a 40% xp penalty since like level 8 heh. It's a bit of a bummer, but if RP leads you down that path, then RP leads you down that path. Look at it this way, it keeps you from levelling like an insane person like the current trend seems to be.

Hey, my elf is an off balance rogue/fighter. I get a 20% xp penalty. Though in the end, it is not that big of a deal. *shrugs* Shoot, I know of an elf who has a 40% xp penalty, and he definitely does not stink, nope, not one bit.

Humans and half-elves always treat their highest class as their favoured class. (Unlike other races, humans are highly adaptable, and half-elves take after them in this respect.)
Prestige classes do not incur an XP penalty, only base classes.
