A new dynamic is entering FRC. Foraging and hunting... soon to add fishing as well.
The way it works is that after rest players will grow hungry. At that time they will need to consume food or will suffer some ill effects.
We will be adding some truly interesting gameplay considerations in support of this. There will be bushes around the lands of Cormyr that can be harvested for berries, mushrooms, etc. Also, players will be able to hunt for meat which can be cooked into prepared meals. Players can also find sustenance at local Inns. Eventually will add the ability to fish, which besides fun will also be a nice role-playing device.
Rangers and druids will have a slightly higher chance to forage food from plantlife. This should be a fun system for everyone.
Once again, a great thanks to DM Ainur for creating and spearheading the effort!
Cheers!

Will elves get any racial bonus towards foraging for mushrooms and such?
Thanks anyway for the promised fishing. Some of the dalakora players had a fishing match which lasted three hours real time, got the winner a nice prize, and was the source of much hilarity - especially the player who seemed to catch nothing but old boots!
And incidentally, Mezereon knows Wee Mad Angus's secret recipe for Scream of Mushroom Soup - which can be purchased from her for a mere 50 coins!

Sounds cool. I figure this will bug me for about a week afterwhich I will get use to it and learn to appreciate cooking a few good taters by the fire in orc territory. ;D

While I can only agree this looks to be fun I also very much fear the bad sides that I could possibly foresee. Some of these is of course guesses made on how I've seen similiar system be at other servers. I usually play very social orientated character (with social I mean characters who will be more likely to sit down and talk than run out and hunt for XP/gold/food/whatever) and as it is now Aren, my main character, has reached level 10; she's constantly needing gold, sure I did buy a +3 armour which took quite long to save up for, while those she started out together with are far above her in level (I don't know about their equipment though), at this very moment she doesn't even have above 5000gp at her, and is again saving up to have her previously mentioned armour modified to actually look good (the look of my character is very importent since I'm not a very pretty person RL). If I now have to take time off of my RP to go hunt for food or to even get enough gold to buy it, I'll honestly be sad. I'm fairly new on this server, something like 2½ month and what I absolutely loved was the fact that no one frowned at you for liking to sit and talk with your character, I love all the intrigues I can get involved in without having to chage around for DM plots (mind you I do not hate those either at all). Another problem I would fear is if we have to carry all the things around. I've already considered to have my languages removed from Aren because they weigh 0.3 each and she got 3. I have already had her autofollow widget and playervoice book removed for the same reasons. Having to carry food around would be as the least annoying and eventually worse (sorry I don't know an actual english word for worse than annoying).
Those would be my two main concerns for this. Now I know that you'll most likely reply to my second concern (the one about weight) that I can always buy it at an inn, but then my first concern comes in, the lack of gold to do so.
Also I'm a bit curious what "some ill effects" covers over ? Does this mean if my character can't afford the food she'll eventually die because of this ? And thus have to respawn only to end up with even less gold and even less a chance to get food ?
Love Hanne

Played on another server where we had to eat. Nothing happened if we didnt but didnt matter, we all did for the most part. We had food rations that came in groups of ten, and you could hunt and prepare your own meat on the fire. Was fine. Will be interesting to see how this goes here. Props to ya.

Currently, the rest system will not allow for the recharging of x/per day items or abilities, such as Red Dragon breath or rune stones. Also, this same problem would prevent casters from regaining their higher level spell slots

Alright, here are some answers to some of your queries:
1) I have to spend money to eat!! GAHH!!! - Yes, you can also choose to just go out and hunt something, cook it, or forage for something (which will be making its appearance soon in most places). Food can be bought at any inn and eventually, at supply stores. They are relatively dirt cheap (1-6gp depending on the meal and your appraise), so I don't see any issue with this at all.
2) I can't rest fully . . . blah blah blah, my spells *bleep bleep* #$!@$% . . . : Yes, yes. I just found out. Funny how it always works flawlessly while testing. I'll have to take into consideration the mysterious underlying lag we get when we're live and compensate for the timing when the hunger fires. This should be fixed by tomorrow. This should also address recharging items with uses/day.
3) How does foraging work?: There will be plants in the wild (more will be added as we move along - there are only a handful of builders, give us a break!) that will allow you to "open", where you will have a chance to search/forage for food. Rangers and druids will naturally have a better chance at this.
4) How does hunting work?: You kill an animal, if it's edible, it will drop raw meat. Contrary to what some of you may want, you cannot eat raw meat, you'll have to cook it. There are cooking pots for sale now with a unique power to spawn a campfire which allows you to cook a meal. Once again, we'll be working to painstakingly add huntable animals in the wild as we go along. Thus far, only wild boars in the hullack can be hunted this way.
5) What does hunger entail, how do you remove it?: Hunger incurs a penalty to your physical attributes (STR, DEX, CON) until you find nourishment. Worst case scenario, you can always use a potion/scroll/spell of lesser restoration as an expensive alternative.
Until the fix, please be patient while we address the fixes.

We have some tweeks and updates coming for the sustenance system this morning that should correct the bugs. I should have the fixes installed and back up on the server in about two hours.

Nice to see we have a use for cook pots then...was wondering where the nifty campfires went: do they still disappear after a time? I know that it was pseudo-necessary because some people wouldn't trash them afterwards but...it kinda stinks to be sitting around a campfire and watch the pot, sticks, and flame get up and walk off...you could just start hurting people who don't clean up after themselves We need Trolloc Cookpots though...extra large ones to put people in or something...just as easter eggs somewhere

Also bear in mind that there are new versions of the cooking pots and food (they should have a Unique Power attached to them) as opposed to ones without any abilities tied to them or some minor healing attached to them. The new versions should be available at most if not all stores but we have likely missed a few and will be updating this as we spot them along the way.

I love food! I played on another server- the server I met ShadowCatJen and ArcadiaDragon- that used food and though at first I frowned at the idea, I soon found out how easy it was. For those complaining about it (I know not many people are) trust me it adds great RP without much hassle. I hardly ever had to buy my food as hunting and foraging usually kept my tummy full. This was with a lvl 3 PC so I know the higher-ups can afford it

Certainly seems like the ideal way to implement food: if you were having to eat constantly thats one thing...but only after you rest...works for me. Besides, mages should need to eat after casting a lot (cheese anyone?)

I loved the idea from the start. Now that the bugs are fixed too, everything fine. And it's really simple so that we don't need to microcontrol our pcs lives.
Well done.

Well I think it's very good!
Starts making a list of things to look out for - fruit trees nut trees wild bee hives with lovely honeycomb bears paws to cook in the honey custard pies that can be equipped as missiles ;D ;D ;D
ps - and remember folks, it's all organic and free range!

Nice idea!
Grumm's been cutting up anything from a rat to a dire bear for his infamous broths since I started with him, will be good to have some "props" to use.
Looking forward to seeing what animals are deemed as edible; finally a resolution to whether you can eat Worg or not!

Besides, mages should need to eat after casting a lot (cheese anyone?) Actually, while I still do not like the system (sorry, but I also know it's never possible to satisfy everyone). I'd rather see this implemented than saying you're hungry when you wake up. For several reasons: 1) If you truely want realism, every one gets hungry from time to time, even those who doesn't rests and some aren't hungry when they wake up but not until several hours later, which leads me onto reason 2. 2) As it is now it'll mostly be people with some kind of pr. day abilities and spellcasters effected by this, which I honestly fail to see the point in even implementing it then. I guess my bottom line is, either take it out or make it equal to all. Love Hanne PS: Please do not think I'm trying to undermine something, simply bringing up my thoughts and concerns for a hopefully healthy debate on the topic.

You'll have to elaborate more on what you mean that it mostly affects spellcasters. As far as I see it, the penalties incurred by fatigue are more detrimental to fighter based classes (str, con, dex) than spellcasters. As for adding the realism of being hungry throughout the day, well, Cormyr is in something of a time paradox as is. Some people view rest time as an 8 hour period. Others feel that it is a 5 min break to catch your breath. According to FRC's time frame, resting can possibly occur every four hours. I don't know about you, but I tend to eat at roughly 4 hour intervals. So I am not quite sure that adding a fatigue based system based on an already incomprehensible timeline is entirely "real". Feel free to argue this further with me I really do want to try and understand your viewpoint.

This wanted added to create a sense of realism. It was added to create a sense of fun, an extra dynamic, and something interesting.

I like it. I think it adds RP possibilities. It also brings up a new category for trader.
As my PC is a trapper/hunter he can now go hunt food and sell it for income.
Also I would like to know what skill check is need to determine how wonderful his cooking is. If I throw down a fire and make some roasted boar with my special Troll blood and Belladonna sauce. I need to be able to determine how good that tastes or how sick it will make the other PC’s who might eat it.
A bard grabs the dice bag and rolls a perform check when playing a song to see if the performance was any good.
I grab the dice bag and roll what to check it the cooking was tastey, alrigth, sufferable, or vomit and gas time?
Thanks for the fun!

There is no skill check that could be applied to how good your cooking is. The only applicable PnP would be the Profession skill. If you find it absolutely necessary to roll a check, then I suppose an wis check would be the way to go since profession skill is based off wisdom. Or I guess maybe survival skill, which is also based off of wisdom. In my opinion, everyone has different tastes. Not everyone is going to like everything. So just because you roll a high roll, does not mean the person should be forced to like it. This is one of the situations where I do agree with the idea of forgoing rolls for roleplaying. P.S. From my experience, trolls stink to high heaven, so you might keep in mind what kind of creatures you are making your food from
