Mnomene's Dawn
By Tanya Steel
- The deaths of fourteen green dragons -
- The affliction of the ancient Topaz Kitangarlust -
- The terrible mists of undeath and hate -
- The Red cowardice of Rehttskaar -
These terrors threatened us all simultaneously...
an overwhelming fate for the Hold of Valkur's Roar...
~ all undone in one moment by her sacrifice ~
Mnomene's great protector Sir Baemarq spoke with the plea that his words be shared, that Mnomene's light not be forgot.
So here I lay these words upon print, to be immortalized by all who pass and read them...
"The dragons who honor the Lord of the North Wind, Bahamut; and who strive against the Dragon Queen...
scales of Gold and Silver, Bronze and Copper, and the Brass of Lady Gorgotha...
though they dwell in lairs far apart, each claiming territory of their own...
they belong to a society, a hierarchy of dragons, a kingdom.
The dragons of Gold, Silver, and Bronze scales take this seriously...
The others, less so in daily life;
paying homage and obeying the decrees when they must.
Some other dragons do as well; some dragons of Song or others of Steel or Mercury.
The King of Justice is appointed, often by being named as successor by the current ruler.
However, circumstances may at times dictate otherwise.
Lady Mnomene's true name was Menexalavoss.
She found Mnomene easier for humans to say, and used it amongst us.
Among the hierarchy of these dragons she was a Princess; aye, the granddaughter of the late King of Justice.
Her hunger got the better of her a time or two;
she'd left pouches of gold on the doorsteps of Lord Skatterhawk and Master Gruteje,
for she did most of her hunting in the hills to the West.
King Lareth was a wise and powerful ruler.
His decrees were only given when truly needed.
He was content to be quiet and observant, rather than overbearing to his people.
When the Sage Nexus had determined that the King-Killer Star was returned,
King Lareth summoned the dragons of his kingdom far to the North,
so that the damage done to the realms by them would be minimized.
The greatest dragon sorcerers placed their kindred into a deep slumber, by which they could resist the rage.
The task fell to Lareth to watch over the sleeping dragons.
When King Lareth began to feel the rage taking hold,
he was to awaken another to take his place and put him to slumber.
It is difficult to imagine, but from what has been said...
every waking moment during the Dracorage was a temptation to succumb to fury.
Great resolve was required to withstand it; King Lareth was well-suited.
King Lareth waited too long, and the rage began to take hold.
He had wished to spare his people the burden, taking it upon himself;
but even the King of Justice could not withstand the rage forever... he succumbed.
Tamarand of the Gold Scales had been chosen as King Lareth's successor,
and it fell to him to challenge and duel the King of Justice.
After a brutal duel, the King was slain.
The mantle passes to Tamarand.
Lady Mnomene... Princess Menexalavoss... had been striving to redeem her family name since.
Great wisdom and great failure were her legacy... she had overcome it, however.
King Tamarand had named Princess Menexalavoss as his successor.
Before she met us at Castle Crag,
she was seeking a mate by which to carry on her family line before she was called to rule.
She had just come of age.
The Benefactor has informed King Tamarand, and a new successor will be chosen.
The dragon kingdom mourns the Princess,
and the likes of Nausticyris the Green gloat and cheer for her loss."
Thus speaks Sir Baemarq of his charge and our savior, Lady Mnomene Princess Menexalavoss the Gold
.
