Hallo community and DM team
I have a question about the legitimacy of knowledge on the server regarding to skilling Lore points . how is it Role played on the server, as a wizard you spend a lot of time in studying before you start your adventuring.
In the early stage of your training if you being tutored of a Master wizard, learning the basics of magic before you set out to adventure. adventuring age varies of course depending on your role play and character but for arguments sake lets say 18 is the age you leave your master and start traveling to further your knowledge beyond that of the basics.
In my own case. my Role play has started my character starting adventuring at the age of 28 because he has spend additionally 10 years focusing in research and study of the ancient empire of Netheril. (( so now we enter Role play Lore and not you specific Lore skill points))I personally like to restrain and have tried very hard ''not'' to be a know it all character, even though as a wizard and with an intelligence over the 20 stats ((our world genius)) they have a vast learning capability compared to others.
My back ground story ((will be posted this week)) is basically that he is specialized in three major subjects, cause even to a genius endless knowledge is impossible, and even within their fields they are still limited and don't know everything.
Over all my question can be cooked down to, How do the community and the Dm's view Lore skill points. Do you split your Lore points in to groups and say. I have 30 skill points in Lore.. so I would say I'm an expert in 3 areas.. and then choose those 3 areas. I personally try and refrain from speaking up when I actually know the answer due to OOC information available about the forgotten realms. and say My character has never studied this field.. it doesn't matter how many points i have in Lore he wouldn't know anything about it.
How does the DM's view this? How does the community view this? in events as well, I play PnP and DM PnP. And beforehand in the game we are to choose what we have ''focused on'' before we start adventure. And the DM will increase the DC needed to know something. when its a subject he character never touched in his background story. sometimes the information is just ''you know nothing of the subject but you have a vague idea that this library might have answers to the answer you seek''
Looking forward to having a constructive discussion about this subject with you all

- Enchanting lesser magical items are part of a wizards training.
- Scribing scrolls
- Some has alchemy training
- Basic lore on magical beasts within your geographical area, and mythical creatures you can't find but are taught about like ''dragons'' or ''Beholders'' ( how much knowledge would one have. and how would that be determined by your Lore points, the first 10 points ?) ((first 10 points of lore, being your intelligence modifier ''4'' and maxing out the 4 skill points in lore so that's normally only 8 points lvl 1))
- And of course spellcasting
- Languages ((in our case with +4 int modfier)) you have learned about 5 languages, in a span on age of 5 to 18. so in 13 years you have learned 5 languages.

- His major research fields is ancient Netheril Empire. this is his main research field when talking of Lore points having spend 10 years on this.
- His secondary research field is transmutation magic, along with enchantment and necromancy. as he focused his magical training with this school ((perhaps his go under spellcraft skill)) i will though argue that a certain amount of Lore points go under these subjects as you study how an undead work so you know how to destroy it as an example.
- Enchanting/creating magical items, as it is part of his background story coming from a land of Magic that specializes in such.
