I just had a thought while watching Harry Potter...
When dealing with hooded folk and recognising people wearing them, I'd never actually thought about the lighting of places like an inn or tavern.
Without florescent lighting, you can't see anything very well. A rogue would find it easy to use a hood to shadow his face. Robes could easily disguise builds as well.
With the lighting of NWN it was easy to overlook that fact.
I've seen dark taverns on other servers. Made it much more realistic.

Many changes since you last played. The lighting in lots of the taverns is darker.

The reason that the interiors that are frequented by players are well lit is to enhance gameplay, not promote poor role-playing.
Initially I felt that better lit areas would be easier to walk around in and interact with, so they use the "normal" toolkit lighting.
