There is a children's tale told to most dwarflings... The tale of the Green Eyed King....
There once was a wise Dwarven King called the Green Eyed King. He Ruled his kingdom with such wisdom that many dwarves would come seeking answers or advice. All who were granted audience were blessed by the Green eyed Kings Wisdom. Each when asked would always remark how amazingly Green the Dwarf Kings eyes were. Like Emeralds sparkling with knowledge.
Because of the great wisdom of the Green Eyed King, his kingdom grew rich. Dwarven Craftsmen traveled long distances to gain assistance from the Green Eyed King. So great was the skill and quality of the items coming from his kingdom that they gained the attention of an ancient Black Dragon. The dragon attacked Fiercely and was barely held back. In the beasts rage, it named itself, Juneigloriusvoluminous, and swore that he would not rest until the Green Eyed Kings greatest riches were his.
This gave the Green Eyed King an idea of how he could save his kingdom from the Ancient Black Dragon.
When the Black Beast attacked. all the craftsmen who were visiting were trapped inside the halls. After the Dragon swore vengeance on the Green eyed king, the king encouraged the crafts men to leave to the safety of their own holds and homes, away from the Black Dragons vengeance.... but, before they left, he told each that he knew the reason for the coming of the ancient black. The Black knew of the skill in crafting that the king possessed. And in the time just before the dragon came, the greatest of items was crafted. The pinnacle of the dwarven art! A Crown that would put all others to shame. a crown of solid Mithril so finely made that once known, the Kings and Lords of the lands would want to travel simply to lay eyes on this legendary crown and then they would pay homage to the Green Eyed Kings skill and ability.
many of the Ancient blacks servants heard rumors of this prize and informed their master Juneigloriusvoluminous. The Ancient Black knew then, exactly what prize to set his eye on. For dragons covet Mithril, with a dark and fierce desire.
The black dragon learned that the Green Eyed King was holding this wonderous Mithril crown in the vault of a deep gold mine. That not only did the crown rest there.... but the bulk of the Green Eyed Kings riches was protected there... The Ancent Black Attacked! The mines defenders were ready for the dark beast, but as Juneigloriusvoluminous attacked, he saw that even the strongest of the dwarven defenders could not stand for long to his terrible might! Pushing through lines of dwarven defenders and down level upon level into the depths of the mine the Evil Black pushed, spurned ever onward by the smell of Mithril that the crown was made from..... finally to reach the vault of the Crown..... as Juneigloriusvoluminous watched the last of the defenders run in fear from the vault, the beast eagerly approached the pedestal where the crown was sitting, covered by an intricately embroidered cloth. the beast took the cloth from the crown to reveal not a crown.... but a dragon sized mithril ring.... a ring decorated with dragon etchings along its inside curve and the Ancient Black Dragons own name on the outside. Juneigloriusvoluminous Roared with such anger that the earth shook.... but it was too late. The trap had been set and sprung. The vault closed. All the dwarven defenders that seem to run in fear or fall defeated, had been under orders to fight fearsomely and then fall back... each had followed the Green Eyed Kings plan and as Juneigloriusvoluminous passed, they placed Rune wards, traps and powerful magic in place behind the beast. The Ancient Black had fallen. Not to strength of arms. Not to ancient Magic, though that is what holds the beast now... but to Greed. The greed of an item that never truly existed.
And that is what Greed is. It is lust and desire for that which will never truly exist. For even when you gain the object of your selfish desires, there will always be more that calls forth the beast of greed to delve ever deeper with eyes clouded. So always remember should you follow the path of this vice, you too will forever be trapped in a vault of your own greed. forever to remain.
