Rolling over in bed, Alexiane squinted as the sunlight of the morning poured down on her face from a nearby open shutter. Being upstairs in the Regal Griffon for once, she could see people moving about in the square below. With the town being thick with travelers, the merchants were peddling out potions and supplies in the early morning hours while people were getting ready to depart to take advantage of daybreak.
She propped herself up on an elbow, reaching up rub at her eyes.
The town was a mystery to her. It was so full of different races and types of people, that it was a wonder for why it remained so small. And the events that she heard plague the town made her wonder how the place survived.
Recently it was the leeches. She sat up a bit taller, moving to sit back on her knees as she peered out the window to get a better look at the creek from her room. It looked peaceful. Surely the sounds of struggle would have woken her up from her sleep last night. As she recalled, that’s why she left the window open. So she supposed that there was nothing eventful the night before.
The entire mess was annoying to her. So many capable adventures and all of them so used to the town being attacked that no one cared, or seemed to care, during the quiet moments. Alexiane recalled how she would talk to people in the square and the faintly annoyed look of travelers as they passed on without any real helpful information.
Well. She didn’t have to settle for it if they didn’t care. She would figure out what was causing the random attacks, and then she would put a stop to it if she could. She didn’t need anyone else’s approval or interest to do so.
With a yawn she rubbed the sleep from her eyes and took a moment to catch a look at herself in a small stand mirror. It was another indication that money flowed through the town enough to offer such a strange mix of hospitality and humbleness. The rooms were what Alex considered to be a minimal comfort, probably because adventuring types were hard on the beds and upkeep. And yet, she had a mirror to look into.
Her plain features looked back at her, with sharp hazel eyes framed with freckles from too much sun and her long brown hair a mess from the bed. She reached a hand up to rub at her cheek where a bruise had been the other night.
“Almost gone now.” She murmured to herself.
There was nothing to be done but to continue to work on the mystery. She pulled together her items, counting her coin with a disappointed frown. She pulled out an over ripe apple, a bit soft on one side, and ate breakfast. It would have to do.
She pulled on a plain clean linen shirt and a pair of well made trousers. Everything she had felt humbled compared to her past. But everything she had was hers. And that felt good.
With a grin she brushed back her hair and tied it away from her face. She thought about what was best to start the day. First, she would have to practice her sword work. But even before that, she decided to post a note. So she sat down and fashioned one with neat blocky letters that would be easy enough to read at a glance.
To whom it may concern,
I am seeking out any information on the recent attacks against Great Gaunt, primarily involving that of water creatures. Common foes include hags, leeches, blue crabs, and water… things. All of these creatures appear to be in different size and skill, and when they attack, they often will surge forth from the water in tandem.
If you know anything about this situation, please seek me out or leave a note for me in the Regal Griffon.
~Alexiane.
She read over the note a few times and then nodded with satisfaction.
After her sword work, she also decided she would sit by the creek and look for clues, and watch the waters. She would get to the bottom of this. It was a challenge now, and she would solve it.
(The note can be found posted outside along with the other requests for work or adventuring help.)
(Alexiane, for those who know her, can be seen often poking about the creek and searching for things in that area.)
