Valera Serena has been retired, and she won't be hawking her wares in Greatgaunt again. As a merchant and moneylender, Valera got to interact with a vast variety of characters, and I cannot possibly list them without accidentally leaving someone out. I'd like to thank anyone who has interacted with Valera over the years and grown a relationship with her, good or bad, friend, rival, or frenemy. The plan was always to end Valera's story one day, to tell a story with a beginning, middle and end. I aimed for a tragic ending where she would be permanently executed, but Hawk presented an alternative, and Valera now lives outside of Cormyr (she could still die one day!). I always wanted to create a character that people had very mixed opinions of, and I think I succeeded with that. This made it difficult for her in some cases, since few people seemed to trust her. She was too good for the bad guys, and too bad for the good guys. She has been suspected of being a Harper, a Maskian and a Banite (?!). She made a lot of friends, but few she were very close with.
As a merchant and moneylender she has made countless deals, some really bad ones, and some pretty great ones. The weirdest was the petrified troll, and the most profitable probably Zodika's boots. I will give a special shout out to the players who participated in the Starmantle plot that led up to Valera's retirement over the last year. The Ironsworn have all been excellent. The tension and arguing with Dimitri and Jay, Valera's growing respect and understanding for Calah and Gertrude, the friendly support from Grillo and Bao, and the friendship and respect with Mara especially stand out. Team Wandering Scholar and Cornucopia with Loria and Dot have been just as amazing. Loria is one of Valera's oldest companions and friends. They're different in many ways, but yet seem to have a mutual understanding and acceptance of each other (and they both like umbrellas). Dot... annoys Valera so much sometimes... but added much needed heart and humour, and was perhaps the biggest catalyst for Valera's character development during this plot. Thank you both for adding so much colour to the adventure and FRC (blood red for Loria!). Vennis and Valera have been through a lot together, from the early days with the Redmyst, the talent show and auctions, the Arabel theatre, to endless conversations and plotting, and brainstorming for that 'next big thing'. Thank you, Lucesi, for the consistent high quality RP. It has been an epic worthy of the Phoenix stage. And of course, a special thanks to everyone who took a loan, rented books, negotiated prices, signed up for Cornucopia Sponsorship, worked as a guard or trader, bought new year lottery tickets, donated to Valera's charity basket, participated in the Cornucopia speech and tailoring contests, or opposed Valera's business schemes in some way. Valera was a non-adventurer, and I played her for the plots and interactions with other characters. It wouldn't have been much fun without adventurers to squeeze coins out of... Thank you FRC, for all the great stories... and all your coin.

- Fisheyes Thanks to Fisheyes for the creation of such a great, interesting and ambiguous character that have had many a night of fun rp with. Valera has been one of Vennis' closest allies over the years and had a massive effect over his character arch. In fact its safe to say he would have turned out a completely different character had their paths never crossed and his relationship with Valera forged much of his progression, plots and contacts in the world. So thank you Fisheyes - it's been unforgettable - I and Vennis are sure as hell going to miss her but I'm glad you were able to bow out with that rarest of things - a satisfactory character ending. See you on the other side.

Have to chime in as well. For many, many years Mara as a character has at times been difficult to play, after a betrayal left her so paranoid of those outside the Ironsworn the character rarely had reasons to interact or trust anyone outside the company. Valera and Vennis both have time and time again proven to act as foils, rivals, whatever description you could give it in the best capacity. Valera always raised Mara's hackles, whatever her interest was at face value, Mara assumed multiple layers to her goals and involvement especially in political matters. However, the last two plus years of interaction solidified the other side of this, the support you two and other non-ironsworn gave during our event pursuiing your own plots whilst helping add your own rp to Hawk's story. Lot of tense moments, and nearly all of them will stick with me a long time.
I appreciate how well you played subtle evil (even if mara was never sure she was evil or neutral, or what her goals were =P) Someone who can manipulate, but can also maintain a respectable level of conduct in the public eye. Beyond my respect for your rp, Valera earned Mara's respect as an outsider, and even though she'd never fully trust her, in mara's own messed up way, with that respect, considered Valera a friend to not only herself, but the Ironsworn. Even if business interests would have eventually turned them against one another, i still think that respect ooc and ic would have been maintained, which is something rare and valuable beyond description in sharing stories via dnd.
So, long rambling aside, thank you fisheyes. I appreciate greatly how much time and effort you put not only towards roleplaying such an interesting character and foil, but as well to how much of the last couple of years has been beside the Ironsworn as an ally and sometimes rival, but always adding to our story and interactions with one another, outsiders and npc's in the surrounding setting. It's been a blast, I look forward to seeing who you bring out of the box next, but Valera will always be remembered and missed, by me, and surprisingly, by Mara as well.

Alongside this post, another one is neeeded for Icoletrain and his character Jay. I've never been a huge fan of playing druids or their roleplay, and that carries over to shifters as well. Nothing against those who play them, but the typical nature rp never much captured my own interest. However, I enjoyed and appreciated your own take with it on jay, even when that came up against the ironsworn in the course of the story. Thank you for the last several years of roleplay with him in the Ironsworn and staying true to how you best felt to play him, even when it went against the grain. I look forward to more interactions with whomever you roll up next, and I am glad to see you get such a rewarding way to send off a character who fought as an Ironsworn through so many battles and arguments.

- Fisheyes I didn't get to role play with or around Valera a large amount of time compared to other characters, but in the few months I played around Valera in the Starmantle plot, you've earned my respect as a role player, as everyone else in the plot did also. I really appreciate how you were able to portray very well and consistently a character who simultaneously had a collection of personal strengths, as well as limits to how far she'd press herself, weaknesses, foibles, and fears, but yet came out on the stronger, more capable, and more respectable side of the bell curve in sum total by making the most of what she had. Kind of like the best most of us in the real world can aspire to. In the one moment Calah challenged her strength of character directly, Valera won her respect by taking it in stride like a boss and came out ahead in her sight. Your role play of Valera was an important part of a story that gave me a chance to show my character for who she is in the situations that arose, as did everyone else who played in the plot, and has been a valuable part of the game for those of us who have shared in that opportunity. May you and your character both walk on with chin held high. Also to Jay/iColetrain, as Bloodalchemist has stated, I think you have done a great job making similar contributions to the game, both in and outside of the Starmantle plot. Again I didn't get a lot of chance to play together directly compared to other characters I've known a long time, but it's clear from the time we spent that you had a very engaging and well developed character to play. He seemed the kind of character whose portrayal comes at a potential price in some ways, in ruffling the occasional feathers, ending up offscreen to others when it's necessary to walk away and take a stand that might not increase his popularity, among other ways. But you stayed true to the character and brought a flavor and color (mostly green and brown, I'd say, being a druid ) that helped bring the game to life and keep people accountable in the ways they acted towards NPC's that might otherwise be brushed aside, and which wouldn't have been possible if you played him in any other way. His rewards from the Guthmere druids are well deserved, and I hope to see him again in some cameo appearance some day when the adventure of the day calls for the appearance of an ambassador from the druidic circle.

While Mynian might have her own very particular and personal thoughts on Valera Serena, for my part fisheyes I'm saddened that we didn't get to have Mynian and Valera interact more often. The dynamic that Valera brought to the server was very telling even in the first few days of me coming back to FRC, and I had hoped one day that I'd be able to have Mynian swim in part of that flow. Alas, two busybody ladies got a little too busybody and ended up traveling in different directions and situations. Such is the way of it. Valera will be missed. Mynian: *putting up a "Happy Wench-Be-Gone Day" banner* "Nay, she won't!" Me: *looking at Mynian in dismay* "Can you not?" Good luck and Game on!
