With the liberation of its people, the new government of the Free City-State of Redmist has written a code of laws to reflect the spirit of the land, one of individual freedom and dedication to the common people.
The Court System: A member of the Redmist Council acts as judge in any given civil or criminal case and are able to bestow the same position on any other city official. A judge may request that testimony be given under the effects of a truth-compulsory spell, as can the prosecuting and defending lawyers, though in the lawyers' cases, they must front the funds to hire a spellcaster themselves. A spellcaster must be approved by the court. Questioning may be sustained based on the relevancy to the case, at the judge's discretion. Defendants charged wishing to appeal a court's decision must do so within a tenday by contacting the City Hall (the defendant will remain detained during the duration if warranted at the City Hall's discretion). Any punishment issued by the court will be withheld until a new judge can hear the case for appeal.
Lawyers are typically reserved for cases that involve crimes of a severe nature. Individuals not native to Redmist are only permitted lawyers in extremely rare cases, at the discretion of the court. In most other cases, the defendant must make their own case. A prosecutor will be assigned and any witnesses will be present to testify. The court system is considered, by most standards, to be fast and efficient.
The Liberation, Preservation, and Defamation Act: With the establishment of the Democratic Council of Redmist, the following edicts have been unanimously passed in order to defend the freedoms and rights of the citizenry, to protect against any further authoritarian rule within the Government, and to thwart attempts to subvert the Democratic Council.
Edict of Liberation - From the establishment of the Liberation, Preservation, and Defamation Act onward, all forms of speech and faith are considered protected under the law of Redmist (exceptions noted under the Edict of Defamation). Suppression of one's right to free speech is considered a severe crime. Individuals may privately practice and worship as they chose, so long as in the act of worship they do not violate the law.
Edict of Preservation - To preserve the legitimacy of the Government, to curb corruption, and to prevent power from amassing on any one individual within the Government, all offices above and including the level of 'Magistrate' are to be filled through public elections every six years. Individuals elected may run for a second term, but are forbidden from any more than two terms in office. The Head of the Council is a lifetime seat given to an individual appointed by the rest of the Council. The only additional powers of the Head of Council is a tie-breaking vote and a permanent seat on the Council.
In an effort to enforce the legitimacy of the government, a government meant to serve the people and not rule over them, the City Hall is to remain open during all Council meetings to permit public viewing.
Edict of Defamation - While private worship of any patron is still permitted, public promotion of a faith or ideology that supports authoritarian power, caste/class-based suppressive rule, or tyranny in any shape or form is forbidden and a severe crime. Public speech and public worship falling under these themes is considered criminal and is not protected by the Edict of Liberation. Any prayers, rites, or sermons given in the public domain will be immediately disbanded, the instigator detained. All such practices must be confined to the worshiper's private residence.
While one's right to freedom of speech is protected, it is important to note that this does not extend to willful disobedience or disrespect of a city official.
