But if you start upstairs, there isn't anywhere to put starting NPC's. Having someone walking around in the basement for new players to talk to makes sense, but havign someone pacing the upstairs hallway doesn't make much sense.

I have switched the entry to the ground floor and placed the main greeting NPC there as well. This will hopefully work out.

Well there is always the option of having a seperate new character starting area. I am sure Justi would be happy to set that up, with all his free time

Hopefully this latest measure that will be effective tommorow will settle all of this. If not, there are a few other ideas floating around.

the new starting location is definately more welcoming... ;D thanks justi and other DMs.
edit: now that the regal griffon is seeing more customers than ever, perhaps more seats could be considered? ;D

Did you know originally we had built Isinhold to have people gather in front of the Isinhold Amplitheater..boy we sure missed the mark on that one

Today i was walking by the old campsite, and there were two campfires; the restful one and the new one. I walked past and after i went up the hill towards the druids it disappeared. Then i went into the barracks and the restful fire was back, right beside the new one. I didn't check if it was actually restful, but i figured i should say it was randomly appearing.

appearently some people are stubborn and don't care to enter the inn of isinhold just to rest.
using supplies to make a restful campfire next to the static one could be some futile attempt to preserve the old camp...

This morning:
Nine players on the server... six at the campfire.
I know people just want an outdoor place to gather and they want it to be casual. Resting doesn't seem to be the issue.
I think the campfire as we know it is going away to be replaced by a campfire in a seperate area or something.
It would be great if Isinhold could capacitate the extra lag this causes the server, but it can't so I will be looking into doing something this week.

LOL I know, make the campfire an extra transition to get to! Maybe have the transition in that little set of woods by the hill.

Honestly I don't think another transition will matter, the hang out spot will just move to the stage or something.
What is so great about the fire is that people always walk by, getting to Merriss or Juster, taking a stroll after they logged in. You just glance over to see if someone is there and if not, you think of something else to do..
And the fire has such an informal feel about it. My chars would never join a table of strangers without being asked but at the fire you can just join in, butt into the conversations or just listen quietly to them and still feel not totally left out like you would sitting at another table...
Hmmm...rereading my last argument...in that case it will not move to the stage...
Oh well, what do I know. I would surely miss that fire...

There should be no restful spot in the town of Isenhold. How many small towns have people sleeping outside? A city maybe...slums may have a few ramshackle places for the destitute to curl up near a fire but even those places are usually somewhat territorial by the local bums there. An out of towner would not simply walk up to an area like this and take a nap. Small towns are too small for it to be tolerated at all. Thats sort of a real world perspective but a small walled town would probably not tolerate people setting up camp inside the walls at all. Those that could not afford to stay at an Inn or home would be run out of town by the town guard if caught setting up a camp in town. If there was a camp area it would be outside the town walls and a sorta tent city probably small in the case of Isenhold. Where the poor pilgims, thieves, vagrants, ect., ect., converge for safety and rest. Maybe even a vendor of very crappy cheap stuff trying to scratch out a living from the poor.
Also Inn's should cost money to rest in cheap 1 GP rooms all the way end of hall or maybe a common room with cots but not convenient should be the basement or something instead of tables there make cots. then maybe 5 GP rooms near end of hall upstairs and 10 GP's or so near the stairwell of the Inn with keys that are destroyed on room entry. You can walk back out but once the door is shut nobody is walking back in again without a key. I mean it's an Inn...
Take the camp fire out and replace it with somthing that makes no sense to gather around. Take out the camp fire near the outside stage too otherwise people will just move within town. A tent city outside of town and the tavern make more senase for gathering to hear rumors and such anyways. No PvP in tent town protects the noobs an unspoken truce amongst thieves or something I don't know. People will still stop on the streets to say hello or whatever you cannot really stop that nor should it be stopped but...loitering could be a law. If a DM notices a group standing on the streets more then 5 or 10 minutes without a good reason morph into a guard and tell em to move along. Most feel uncomfortable standing on a street for long anyways. Now that its PvP again in Isenhold they may be even less likely to stick to the streets for long in such a well trafficked area.
Sorry I talk too much but thats what I think.

dirkperfect, you make some good points in your post. i like the idea of the little tent area outside town and that it should be no PvP. gives a place for the newbs and thieves. the idea of paying for rooms at the inn however... you mention three different classes of rooms for different prices which would involve more scripting and building, and like you said yourself, isinhold is a small town. so the inn can't be that classy... i like the free rooms at the inn. i agree we should remove the restful cot by the stage however. the campfire is definately a great hangout spot and i think what kitiara says about it is an important point. you can just pop in and listen in on conversations without feeling left out, and it's so easy to check if anyone's there or not. tables are a form of restriction, a boarder that has to be crossed and you feel like you're intruding by sitting down at someone else's table. there was never that problem at the campfire. however, when it all comes down to it, i can live without the campfire. you just have to make friends who won't mind if you butt into their conversations. even kruhl has such friends (well, one friend, but that's still good progress for someone like him ;D). bottom line: i don't think it's possible to create a new hangout spot that will truly replace the old campfire. so either we'll have to sacrifice it, or we'll have to have lag. i can adjust, and i say nuke it. the inn makes for a nice hangout spot even if it isn't as perfect as the old campfire.

Well making an area no PvP won't make your theives happy. Honestly I think the whole server should be PvP. In the real world there are no safe bases. Now I am not calling for battles everywhere, but I like the suspense of never feeling completely safe.

Seeing 6 people around the fire this morning wasn't really causing much server lag, but it is the idea of such an extreme ratio hanging out. On a normal night when we have 15-20 on though and 4-8 on the campfire it is going to hurt.
Hey, I love the campfire as much as anyone. If it were up to liking or loving the spot, this wouldn't be an issue. But it's not... it's about what's best for the greater good. And right now I am leaning on eliminating this little sore spot. It will certainly be replaced with something you can all complain about... now aren't we all happy?

I dunno, I've noticed quite a lot more people inside the Regal, and haven't seen hardly any campfire milling in the past 2 weeks. But I spend very little time in Isinhold.
I always thought the campfire thingy was wierd...and it was really cool the other day with the Regal being full of people. Though it is understandable why people are hesitant to hang out inside.
Someone could walk right by hte door, and you would never know. it will just come down to an active decision by the players to go to the Inn when they come to town, and to stay in the Inn when they are looking to meet people. That's my 2 coppers anyways

Hmm Ok maybe my Inn idea is a bit extravagant but it is still an Inn and considering the money flow in Isenhold as a major center for adventurers I would say the Inn might be one of the best buildings in town. I still think one should have to pay for a private room at the Inn. Make the basement into the common room....that can be for free. Make a one time fee for the private rooms....say 20 gold like you rented it give you a key that stays in your Inventory from then on that way no scripting involved except placing the room doors with the simple auto-shut and lock script. Course it may fall on deaf ears but its an establishment that provides a service. Not a huge deal to me just that now the Inn has become center piece of Isenhold lets make it a bit more Inn-like? Don't have to change the look inside although maybe if it remains free room and board you can put the second floor on the same tile as the ground floor so thier is no load screen to the second floor like in Redmist? I liked the fire too I wish it did not have to go but it does due to huge lag because of the amount of people there. Thats why I suggested a small area like a tent town just outside Isenhold the most likely area cause it's traveled the most is just south of Isenhold. People may even stop coming to town for that quick nap. Maybe No PvP is unrealistic and ruins that sense on edge or immersion but so is never paying for rooms, not having to eat and drink, sleeping in town with your enemies while everyone chats in a great big group friend and foe alike, ect, ect an Inn may have tables you feel wierd walking up to and joining in on a conversation but....How many restaurants do you do that in? atleast in the game you can still easily over hear everything unlike in the real world. When something pertains to you or someone you know most will go over and ask "What about Joe player character that you don't like buddy!?" It may give espionage a new twist where people really start trying to keep things quiet while the whiley thief tries to over hear a conversation in the room and tries to sell the information...should have bought that private room after all! There I go rambling again sorry hehe I can never say anything short when I type my mind has a million thoughts and alternatives flowing through it in great big mess. I doubt I even kept them organized in this post ;D Dag gone A.D.D. I am still wanting to spew more suggestions forth but I will stop....for now
Viva la fire! Never forget! Vini Vidi Viche....or something! and latin sucks cause I don't know it!

I'll miss it, for sure, but if it's for the greater good, no complaints from me.
And Dirk, the correct way is Vini, vidi, vici. Means "I came, I saw, I conquered." Literally into English, it's "I did come, I did see, I did conquer." The 'v' is pronounced like a 'w', unless you're speaking secular Latin, which gets so much of the traditional Latin WRONG. But that's us Catholics, for ya. And Latin does suck. I should know, I took it for four years.

HA! I knew I was wrong I thought about editing the post but I wanted it all in it's full glory of screw up. Never correct a perfect screw up I say! Now just give me the phrase that would be The fire came, it saw, it conquered and you and me will be in buisness. The fire was awesome but throw some water on that puppy it's a liability

this just popped in my head as a good way to keep people hanging inside the Inn rather than outside the Inn. Make the vendors there.
It may be a little strange RP wise, but perhaps something could be done so that more marketing could be done in the Regal, therefore making more traffic flow through it, therefore making people more apt to hang out in there to watch traffic rather than hang at the fire to watch traffic.
It's just an idea, and not a very complete idea at that, but maybe you can play with it. *shrugs*

Maybe giving people more reasons to go to the inn would help like logan says. And perhaps there could also be a table where more than 5 people can sit. I don't know where Kale would have to put that though, maybe he needs to invest some money to renovate the place.... For now, when we do hang out in the inn it happens a lot somebody just has to stand by a table or sit at another because all the seats are taken...it is not a biggy but well... I do remember the times Redmist Inn was a hang out place, that seemed to work for some reason. (until some nasty low life took over the place and it all went down hill )

well if seating room is the problem, there is always that big dining room in the back which I and others have often RPd as having Kale cater a bit for us and bring in pitchers of ale and some food for us to all munch on. but it has a lot more seats than any of the other tables.

i did make a suggestion for having more seats before, but really, i think the only thing we need is to have the campfire removed, and i don't think the inn needs any revisions. people will find a new hangout spot, they always do. we don't need to make sure it's going to be the regal griffon inn that everyone will flok to. the purpose of this thread is to keep people from sitting around the campfire lagging up the server. with the campfire gone people will go to new places which can only be possitive (too many people never leave isinhold) and set up new hangout spots through RP. as for me, i can use the inn as a good hangout spot, but if the situation calls for it, i can sit down and RP for hours on end almost anywhere that doesn't have respawning encounters to disrupt the conversation, just so long as i have people to talk to... let's not make this a bigger issue than it is. the inn has plenty of seating like logandoug says. there's the backroom and also the basement for those of you who really wanna use it as your new hangout spot. note: why is the inn of redmist still a place of ill repute? i haven't seen it's owner in a long time now and i haven't seen alot of banites near redmist either.
